South Sider stabbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 30-year-old South Side man is in stable condition at Northside Medical Center after being stabbed in the chest as he walked into his West Delason Avenue home early today, police and hospital officials said. The victim told city police he had returned from Larry's Lounge on Hillman Street about 2:30 a.m. when he was stabbed by two unidentified men who came toward him from a neighboring abandoned church. He went to the home of a neighbor, who took him to the hospital. When police arrived later at the victim's home, they found his girlfriend, of a different West Delason address, at his home. She told police she was there to retrieve belongings and that she had put ketchup on his 1998 Jeep Cherokee while he was at the bar because he had cheated on her. She said she had knocked on his door several times but received no answer. The woman was arrested after police discovered she was wanted for failing to appear in court on a traffic violation.
Westlake arrests
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police made two drug arrests Wednesday while patrolling the Westlake Terrace homes on the North Side. A 49-year-old man from Springfield, Mass., faces charges of crack cocaine drug abuse and drug paraphernalia after he jumped from his vehicle at about 6 p.m. when police approached. The man attempted to hide a crack pipe in his hand. Upon searching his car, police found a bag of suspected crack cocaine and a second piece of paraphernalia. At about 9:15 p.m., police arrested a 55-year-old West Boardman Street man who ran when officers approached him in a courtyard. Police chased and wrestled the man, forcing him to spit out suspected crack cocaine. Police found a crack pipe in his pocket. He faces charges of cocaine drug abuse, drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest.
Mill schedule changes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lanterman's Mill in Mill Creek MetroParks resumes its fall schedule, opening from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays this month. The season will end with the MetroParks' annual tribute to the holidays, An Olde Fashioned Christmas at the Mill, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 24-25. The free event will feature artisans, musicians and jugglers. Crafts and roasted chestnuts will be for sale.
Arrested at truck stop
AUSTINTOWN -- A 38-year-old Youngstown woman was arrested Wednesday night after she offered sex acts to an undercover police officer in exchange for money. The woman, of East Judson Street, was charged by police with soliciting sex and resisting arrest. Reports state that an undercover officer met with the woman at about 8:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the Rebel 38 truck stop on Seventy-six Drive. The officer said the woman told him she would perform various sex acts for $30, $40 or $50. Police said the woman tried to run away before she was arrested.
Treatment ordered
YOUNGSTOWN -- Municipal Judge Robert Douglas ordered that a 60-year-old West Earle Avenue man who made a bomb threat against the Mahoning County Justice Center undergo treatment at the Veterans Affairs hospital. Joseph P. Gregory pleaded no contest to a charge of making a false alarm, court documents show. Judge Douglas sentenced him to 180 days in jail, to be suspended if he completes treatment. Gregory will be jailed until treatment begins, court workers said. Gregory was accused of calling 911 Oct. 29 and threatening that a bomb would go off inside the Mahoning County Justice Center.
Benefit dinner
KENT -- Bishop Thomas J. Tobin of the Diocese of Youngstown will be the host of the annual Voice of Hope Dinner for Catholic Charities starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the ballroom on the main campus of Kent State University. Bishop Anthony M. Pilla of the Diocese of Cleveland is the speaker. Proceeds will provide winter utility assistance to needy families through the Catholic Charities agencies in the diocese's six counties. Flu vaccine clinic
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Independence Home Health Care is offering a flu vaccine clinic for people 18 and older from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Mahoning County Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave. The cost is $15.
