MAHONING COUNTY SCHOOLS Canfield puts coach on board

Wednesday, November 7, 2001

A former Mahoning County commissioner returns to public service with a victory.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
The Canfield school board angered dozens of residents this summer when it removed Sam Pitzulo as the high school's junior varsity baseball coach.
But on Tuesday, Pitzulo and his supporters got the last laugh.
Pitzulo won a seat on the Canfield Board of Education, garnering 16.8 percent of the vote in an eight-candidate field, according to unofficial election results.
Bruce Brocker and incumbent Mark Squicquero also garnered seats.
Pitzulo, JV coach for five years, will now serve with board members who in July voted to exclude him from the baseball coaching staff next year.
County races: In other school board races in Mahoning County, former Mahoning County commissioner David Engler narrowly defeated James E. "Ted" Roberts for a two-year unexpired term on the board of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center.
Engler got 50.1 percent of the vote, compared to Roberts' 49.9 percent, according to unofficial results. Incumbents J. Paul Good, Pat Vivo and Joyce E. Brooks won full, four-year terms to the board.
In Campbell, incumbents Walter Rusnak and Michael Tsikouris were defeated in the race for city school board. Karen Repasky led the seven-candidate field with 18.2 percent of the vote. Also winning seats were Bob Dolan and Diana Petruska, who each received 1,136 votes or 16.3 percent.
Struthers: Eleanor Polis, an incumbent on Struthers Board of Education, also was defeated Tuesday. Kandace Becker-Hagendorn led the field of six candidates with 27.6 percent of the vote. Also elected were Matthew Rhoads and incumbent Joseph Edwards.
Both of the incumbents for Boardman school board -- Fred Davis and Mark Fulks -- won re-election. They will be joined on the board by Kimberly Poma, who received the most votes in a five-way race.
