Local parade for heroesattracts many groups
BOARDMAN -- Police and firefighters aren't the only heroes who will be honored Saturday during "The Valley's Tribute to American Heroes: A Red, White and Blue Parade."
Twenty veterans groups also have entered the parade, including the United Veterans Council of the Greater Mahoning Valley. The council represents nearly 50 local veterans organizations.
Council Commander Ray Ornelas said the veterans, police and firefighters are all safety forces who have worked to defend and safeguard Americans. He added that the council thinks the parade "is one of the greatest that has ever happened in the greater Youngstown area."
"They're elated over this," Ornelas said of the veterans.
The parade is being presented by The Vindicator and WFMJ TV 21 to honor veterans and the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. It will start at 10 a.m. on Market Street at Nisonger Drive and end at the Boardman Township Administration Building.
Ornelas said it will give local residents the opportunity to remember those who have fought and died for America.
