New Tigers' coach
Joe Smith, defensive coordinator at Streetsboro High School the last two years, is the new coach of two-time defending Inter-County League football champion Springfield High. Smith's hiring was approved Wednesday by the board of education. More, C3.
New opponent
Heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman's first title defense will be against David Izon instead of Denmark's Brian Nielsen, The [Baltimore] Sun reported. Rahman's bout with Izon, part of a four-fight deal worth $75 million, will take place in Beijing on Aug. 4 as the undercard of the World Boxing Association title bout between John Ruiz and Evander Holyfield, the newspaper said today. Rahman, a Baltimore native, won the World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation crowns by knocking out Lennox Lewis on April 21 in South Africa.
