Warren fire chief goeson extended sick leave
WARREN -- Fire Chief Jay Mulligan has placed himself on extended sick leave.
Mayor Hank Angelo said Mulligan requested the leave and he does not know when Mulligan will return to work.
The mayor declined to give any other details.
1st Ward councilwomanretains her position
WARREN -- Bonnie Viele remains Hubbard's 1st Ward councilwoman.
The Trumbull County Board of Elections certified election results Wednesday, confirming that the incumbent defeated Albert J. Patrick 181-178. The election-night count showed Viele winning by one vote.
Board officials say counts for other races changed slightly, but the outcomes were unchanged.
Extra enforcement
GIRARD -- The police department here will step up traffic enforcement for the Memorial Day weekend. The focus will be U.S. Route 422. The program will run from Friday through Sunday evening.
Township participatesin safety belt campaign
BROOKFIELD -- Township police are involved in a safety belt campaign sponsored by the Governor's Highway Safety Office until June 4.
To promote the campaign, officers are using a "click it or ticket" enforcement strategy.
Motorists are reminded to have their safety belts fastened when driving and to ensure that all children are properly restrained.
Renovated offices open
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Recorder's Office returned this week to renovated offices in the county administration building after 16 months at the Wean building on North Park Avenue.
Some historical records are still being moved, but Recorder Diana Marchese said customers should now come to the administration building offices.
Council cancels meeting
GIRARD -- City council has canceled its meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
Lawmakers will meet next at 7 p.m. June 11.
Education board meets
McDONALD -- The board of education will meet briefly in special session at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to approve a formal construction document to be submitted to the Ohio School Facilities Commission for the construction phase of work at the high school.
Formal state permission is required to proceed with work on general trades, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, window and other construction.
Dead puppies foundin trash receptacle
YOUNGSTOWN-- Five puppies -- four of them dead-- were found in a large trash receptacle Wednesday morning on the East Side.
The fifth puppy died after the Mahoning County Dog Warden arrived on the scene.
The puppies had been placed in a plastic trash bag before being put in a bin on Kendis Circle. They were found at around 9:30 a.m. by police investigating a report of a baby in the bin.
Police reports show that the puppies were apparently drowned.
Shooting plan probed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating reports that a seventh-grader at Volney Rogers Junior High School was planning to shoot out the windows of the school with a pellet gun.
The pupil reportedly asked fellow pupils if they would help.
The principal contacted police Wednesday afternoon after receiving calls from concerned parents.
Patient arrested
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A 29-year-old East Pine Street man being treated at United Community Hospital was arrested after he was accused of assaulting hospital personnel and two state troopers.
Police said the man was intoxicated and became violent while being treated around 12:15 a.m. today.
Police said they found a marijuana pipe in his possession.
He was to be arraigned today on assault and drug charges.
