CORTLAND -- The Lakeview High School Concert Band won Division 2 and received an excellent rating at a band competition in Williamsburg, Va., that featured bands from seven states.
The school's majorettes also received a top rating of superior in their category and the first-place trophy.
The symphonic band was named Champion Band of the festival with its superior rating and first-place finish in Division 4.
Also winning trophies were soloists Fred Burazer on alto sax, Bill Danso on trumpet and Heather Young, flute.
The symphonic band, meanwhile, made its 30th consecutive trip to an Ohio contest in Brunswick, earning its first superior rating in Class A.
The music program will perform its jazz festival Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Joining the hosts will be Howland, Liberty and Champion Middle School musicians. Festival admission is $2.
Burned toast causes fire
GIRARD -- Burned toast is being blamed for a $40,000 fire Thursday afternoon at the home of Mary McInnis, 303 S. Davis St.
Fire Capt. Sal Ponzio said McInnis went outside and when she returned, the burning toast had caught some paper towels on fire and the smoke alarm sounded.
She went to a neighboring house to call for help.
Firefighter Ken Borniss was treated at Forum Health Northside Medical Center for smoke inhalation.
School official to retire
NILES -- Superintendent Patrick Guliano announced at a school board meeting Thursday that William Leonard, director of facilities and operations, will retire Aug. 1.
Leonard has worked in his current post five years but has been with the district 37 years, making him the most senior district employee, Guliano said.
Armed Forces Day
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College will have a Mercer County Armed Forces Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Retired Marine Corps Lt. Col. Jim Smartz, director of the Mercer County Department of Veterans Affairs, will speak and there will be an Air Force flyover.
There will be a musical salute by retired Army Sgt. Tim McCall. The program will be followed by a reception on the Howard Miller Student Center terrace.
Ambulance purchase
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township trustees have accepted a bid from Penn Care Medical Products, Niles, for a new ambulance for about $102,000.
Penn Care's bid was the highest of four but the only bid that satisfied all criteria and specifications of the rescue squad, Trustee Reed Metzka said.
Phone-scam warning
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police are warning people not to give out personal financial information over the telephone.
Shenango Township Police said a man called a woman Thursday, saying he needed her Social Security number, bank account and credit cards numbers to keep them from being put on the Internet. The man hung up when she asked his name.
Nurses meeting
BOARDMAN -- The Licensed Practical Nurse Association, Division 3 of Mahoning and Trumbull counties, will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at The Greenbriar, 8064 South Ave.
The program will be on nutrition, weight loss and physical fitness, presented by Dr. M. Shayesteh, professor of clinical nutrition at Youngstown State University.
Cost is $2 for members and $4 for nonmembers.
Jailed in assault on boy
SHARON, Pa. -- A Rex Place woman and her boyfriend were in jail today after a dispute involving the woman's 13-year-old son.
Geraldine P. Hepfl, 34, and Alvie L. Eicher, 34, were being held on $10,000 bond each, Hepfl charged with disorderly conduct and making terroristic threats and Eicher with simple assault.
Police said they were called to the home around 5:30 p.m. Thursday after the boy reported Eicher had pushed him down and struck him. The child had superficial injuries.
Police said Hepfl began threatening and swearing at her son in front of the investigating officer, resulting in her arrest.
The boy was placed in custody of Mercer County Children and Youth Services.
