CLEVELAND -- Federal grand jury indictments have been returned against a Farrell, Pa., resident on a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
The U.S. attorney's office for the Northern District of Ohio announced that Darwin O. Crumby, 36, of Hamilton Avenue, Farrell, was charged with conspiring between February 2000 and April 26, 2001, to distribute cocaine in Ohio and Pennsylvania after an investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison and an $8 million fine.
Driver hospitalized
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Louise M. Hughes, 76, of Whippoorwill Drive, Hermitage, remained in serious condition this morning in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, with injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident at Pa. Route 208 and U.S. Route 19 in Springfield Township at 1 p.m. Wednesday. State police said Hughes was driving west on Route 208 and failed to stop for a stop sign at Route 19. Her car was hit broadside by a pickup truck driven by Craig D. Hale, 27, also of Hermitage. Hale suffered minor injuries, and a passenger in Hughes' car, Ester Rough, 85, also of Hermitage, was treated at United Community Hospital.
Held in burglary
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police arrested Timothy McKinley, 19, of North Good Hope Road on charges of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property in the April 19 burglary of Crossroads Christian Church on Vernon Road.
McKinley was picked up at his home Tuesday afternoon and arraigned before District Justice William Fagley, who ordered him held in Mercer County Jail with bond set at $5,000 pending a preliminary hearing. Police said a guitar and computer and sound equipment were stolen.
MammoVan scheduled
The American Cancer Society's MammoVan will be at the Columbiana and East Liverpool ACS' Relays for Life beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and June 9, respectively, to check women for breast problems or breast cancer. The Columbiana Relay for Life is at Firestone Park and the East Liverpool Relay for Life is at Mangano Track at East Liverpool High School.
To make an appointment for the MammoVan, women should call the Mahoning Valley ACS at (330) 533-0546. Women should bring their insurance card or a voucher from B.E.S.T. (Breast Education Screening and Treatment), which will pay for the examination for women who have no insurance or are underinsured.
Buck-up campaign
NORTH LIMA -- Beaver Township Police Department will participate in the Ohio Department of Public Safety's "What's Holding You Back" seat-belt campaign along with the national Operation ABC (America Buckles Up Children) Mobilization.
The local department has received $14,000 in state funding to pay for overtime for officers who will work extra shifts in targeted areas throughout the township from May 24 through June 4.
The township officers will target the New Buffalo and Kreps roads area, the two-lane portion of Market Street and state Route 165 and South Avenue.
Yard, sidewalk sales
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer Civic Committee is having a yard sale and merchants' sidewalk sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Shoppers can pick up lists of the yard sale locations at Courthouse Square Dry Goods, Otter Creek Store, Shannon's Kandy Kitchen, The Gallery, Mercer Mercantile & amp; Soda Shop and the chamber of commerce office. Fellowship Community Church will be offer free carwashes and Trinity Presbyterian Church will have a free baby-sitting service for children older than age 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Jailed in fraud case
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police arrested Sonya Townsend, 33, of Market Street on charges of access device fraud and receiving stolen property. She was accused of taking an access card from an acquaintance Tuesday and using it to make $155 in purchases, police said. She was arraigned Wednesday before District Justice Henry Russo, who ordered her held in Mercer County Jail with bond set at $5,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing. An access card could be a credit or debit card, something that gets its holder access to money.
