DISTRICT TENNIS 2 doubles teams win state spots



Advancing were players from Canfield and Howland.
ROCKY RIVER -- Shalin Shah and Chris Kuppler of Canfield High and brothers Kevin and Ryan Trapp of Howland have advanced to the semifinals in the Division I district tennis tournament at Tri-City Park.
They are also assured of advancing to the state tournament next week in Columbus. The top six singles and doubles placers advance.
Shah and Kuppler eliminated Joe Weissfeld and James Daly of Akron Firestone 6-1, 6-1 in a first round doubles match Wednesday, then defeated Neelesh Kantak and Jon Caporale of Revere 6-0, 6-1.
The Trapp brothers beat Aaron Huberfield and Ezequiel Guldin of Solon 7-5, 6-2 and then eliminated Nick Ciapetta and Jonathan Kelley of Jackson, 6-3, 6-2.
Pairings: Saturday, Shah and Kuppler will take on Wooster's Chris Pleska and Chris Wilson, and the winner of that match will play for the championship.
Pleska and Wilson eliminated Canfield's Dave Vodhanel and R.T. Vernal 6-4, 7-5 in a first-round match.
In the other semifinal match Kevin and Ryan Trapp will face Matt Smith and John Goheen of Shaker Heights.
In singles competition, David Rozek of Chardon defeated Noah Weiss of Canfield 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1 in a first-round match.
Boardman's Thomas Barth was also eliminated in the first round, losing to Stephen Rozek of Chardon 6-2, 6-1.
The Division II tournament, at Jackson Park in Stark County, was to begin today.
