Board hires lawyer in Altiere finances case
WARREN -- Columbus attorney George McCue will represent the Trumbull County Board of Elections at a May 31 hearing before the Ohio Elections Commission regarding Sheriff Thomas Altiere's campaign finances since 1993.
The board voted Monday to hire McCue, of the firm Crabbe, Brown and James, for $125 per hour after the county prosecutor declined to represent the board, citing a conflict of interest. The county prosecutor's office is the official legal counsel for all county offices and this case pits one against another.
McCue also is representing the board against the sheriff in a related case pending in 5th District Court of Appeals.
League meeting
WARREN -- The League of Women Voters of Trumbull County has its annual meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Warren Women's Club. The cost for brunch is $10. The league will elect officers and approve a budget. For reservations, call Velia Baba at (330) 638-1876.
Diversity conferenceset at MetroPlex
LIBERTY -- The Trumbull and Mahoning County Departments of Job and Family Services will be host for the statewide Cultural Diversity Conference May 24-25 at Holiday Inn MetroPlex. The theme of this year's conference is "Changing the Norm by Celebrating Our Differences." Experts from around the country will participate . Workshops are geared to help participants develop skills and strategies needed to respond to the diversity of families in Ohio.
Car hits deer
NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. -- A 56-year-old Niles man had a run-in with a deer near here this morning. Pennslvania State Police in Beaver County said Noah Johnson of 238 Mahoning Ave. was southbound on state Route 60 about 6:20 a.m. when the deer ran in front of his Chevy Beretta near Exit 14 and was hit.
No other information was available.
Hartford cleanup
HARTFORD -- The township will have its annual spring cleanup Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until trash bins are filled.
Tires, water heaters, stoves, washers, dryers, batteries and refrigerators will be accepted from Hartford Township residents.
Freon must be removed from appliances before they are brought in.
No paints, oils or liquid chemicals will be accepted.
Mercer event to honorVietnam War dead
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Vietnam Era Veterans Association will have its annual Remembrance and Reflections Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the county courthouse at 2 p.m. Sunday. The program honors the men from Mercer County who were killed in the Vietnam War. Their names will be read and a rose placed at the memorial in their honor.
Car accident update
CANFIELD -- Two Lake Milton men are still being treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center as a result of a fatal car accident on U.S. Route 224.
John P. Cunningham, 30, was in critical condition today and Michael Slepski, 31, was in stable condition.
Cunningham was driving a minivan west on Route 224 near Crory Road when the accident occurred at about 9:10 a.m. Saturday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported. Slepski and Joaquin C. Holstein, 28, of Lake Milton, were passengers.
Patrol reports indicate that Cunningham drove off the road and struck a mailbox, then went back across the center line and hit a tractor-trailer carrying a manufactured home.
Holstein was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation continues.

HOWLAND -- Former NASA computer specialist William H. Crell Jr. will discuss technology spinoffs from the space program in a free presentation at the Howland Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library at 6:30 p.m. May 23.
