DIV. II Cormell rescues Wildcats at end

Struthers was down to its final out when the team rallied for a tournament win.

STRUTHERS -- Down to its last out and trailing Hubbard 1-0, Struthers High's Chuck Cormell delivered a bases-loaded single to lift the Wildcats to a 3-1 win in a Division II sectional baseball tournament game Thursday.
"I was just looking to make contact," Cormell said. "I just saw the hole on the left side and was hoping to hit it that way."
Struthers (13-5) will face Metro Athletic Conference rival Niles in a district semifinal Thursday at Cene Field.
Hubbard (11-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Garrett Cravener singled with one out. He was sacrificed to second.
Scored from second: Marty Kanetsky hit a ground ball up the middle and beat the throw to first base. Cravener never stopped running and scored.
Hubbard had a chance to break the game open in the fifth. With runners on first and third, Kanetsky hit a shot up the middle that Struthers' pitcher Pat Watt stopped and caught the lead runner off third for the second out.
Watt (7-1) retired the next hitter to keep it at 1-0.
The Struthers seventh began with a single by Bob Benson. A wild pick-off throw advanced pinch-runner Dan Monaco to second and he went to third on a ground out.
Eric Barone reached first on a fielder's choice and Monaco was thrown out at the plate on a ground ball by John Stanko.
Matt Medvec of Struthers was hit by a pitch to load the bases and with an 0-1 count, Cormell singled in the hole between third and short, which scored two runs and a third run came home on a wild throw.
Watt gave up eight hits, striking out six and walking four while Kevin LIbeg (4-2) threw a four-hitter and struck out eight for Hubbard.
Coaches pleased: "I was pleased at the way we played," Hubbard coach Jess Hall said. "Kevin pitched a great game."
Struthers coach Bill Cammack said, "Pat gutted it out. He didn't have his best stuff today.
"We got a big hit from Chuck Cormell. Their pitcher threw the ball extremely well."
Kanetsky and Marc Barca each had two hits for Hubbard.
