PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL Johnston tosses first no-hitter as South Range rips Lowellville



The Raiders eliminated the Rockets from Div. IV sectional baseball play.
NORTH LIMA -- Junior Jeff Johnston threw the first no-hitter of his career as South Range High blanked Lowellville 18-0 in a Division IV sectional baseball game Tuesday.
Johnston struck out eight and walked two in the game called after five innings.
South Range (17-5) defeated Lowellville three times this season. The top-seeded Raiders will play in the district tournament Tuesday at Cene Park at 4:30 p.m.
Leading the 14-hit attack was Jimmy Sanders with two doubles and a single, while Greg Rohan had three singles.
Brad Johnson doubled twice, Tom Kimmel had a two-base hit and Jason King drove in four runs for the Raiders.
Canfield 12, Salem 4: SALEM -- Scott Wadman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored to lead Canfield past Salem in a regular-season Metro Athletic Conference game.
Paul Suhar had a homer and five RBIs and Blair Lang tripled and doubled for the Cardinals (15-9, 4-6).
Jake Conrad and Jason Paster doubled for the Quakers.
Girard 14, Newton Falls 3: NEWTON FALLS -- Elliott Steverson hit a home run, double, single, scored twice and drove in three runs for the Indians (15-6, 7-5 Trumbull Athletic Conference). Mike Williams hit a double, two singles, scored twice and drove in three runs.
Jason Collins (4-1) scattered five hits and struck out nine to pick up the win.
Tim Bauman hit a triple and single to pace Newton Falls (6-11, 3-11).
Youngstown Christian 9, Cleveland Heritage 7: CLEVELAND -- Brothers Mike Byrdy and Matt Byrdy combined to pitch a five-hitter and spark Youngstown Christian in an American Christian Schools International League game.
The Byrdy brothers registered nine strikeouts, seven by Mike (1-1).
Catcher Themi Tsarnas rapped four singles in as many trips and drove in two runs to also lead Youngstown Christian (10-2-1, 5-0).
Softball: AUSTINTOWN -- Julie Kemesky and Joanna Fergus each had two hits, as Austintown Fitch High scored all of its runs in the first inning to pin a 3-1 setback on Ursuline, in a regular season Steel Valley Conference softball game.
Andrea Diyorio doubled home the first run of the game for Fitch (14-9, 5-2).
Brianna Ozias (12-6), who pitched a three-hitter, doubled in the third for the Falcons.
Dorothy Delboccio had two hits for the Irish (4-9, 1-5).
Western Reserve 5, Columbiana 4: COLUMBIANA -- Jaclyn Speece and Mikah Berger combined to pitch a six-hitter to lead Western Reserve in an Inter-County League game.
The two pitchers teamed for seven strikeouts, Berger getting five. Speece improved her record to 11-3.
Tiffany Palumbo had a double and single for Western Reserve (15-4, 10-3), which built a 5-1 lead and then held on for the win.
Krystle Crittenden had two singles and two RBIs for Columbiana (13-8 overall).
