LOIS LOUISE CHORPENNING OWEN, 74 Involved with choir, 4-H; was a teacher



YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Goble Funeral Home, Clarion, Pa., for Lois Louise Chorpenning Owen, 74, of Stoney Lonesome Road, Clarion, who died Friday in Beverly Health Care, Shippenville, Pa.
Mrs. Owen was born June 18, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of Creed M. and Mollie L. Cray Chorpenning. A 1944 graduate of Boardman High School, she received a certificate from the Cleveland School of Art, a bachelor's degree in advertising art from Texas State Women's University and her master's degree in science in Communications from Clarion University.
She was a draftsperson in the research division of the Austin Co. in Cleveland, was a statistical control person in the lab of Carling's Brewery in Cleveland, and taught art, mechanical drawing and photography at the high school level before retiring in 1988 after 22 years. She taught stitchery classes at Elderhostel and the Sawmill Center of the Arts, Cook Forrest, Clarion County.
In the Youngstown area, she was a member of Boardman Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in its choir and co-chaired its annual Antique Show. She was involved for seven years with 4-H, where she served on the Mahoning County 4-H Fair Board, and had been a 4-H leader for three years in Clarion. She sang with the Youngstown Philharmonic Choir, was a member of American Association of University Women, the Gourmet Group and Great Books Group. She was a member of the Embroiders Guild of America and the American Needlepoint Guild, Inc.
While in Clarion, she was a member of First United Methodist Church, its choir, was president of the Psi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International and was on various committees. She was past president of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.
She began the Nydill Chapter of the Embroiders Guild of America, was its first president and served as treasurer. Her stitchery has been displayed at the National Convention of the Embroiders Guild of America in Louisville, Ky., and Kate's Gallery in Clarion, with other pieces displayed at the Convention of Delta Kappa Gamma International. She enjoyed a variety of stitchery and embroidery and was an avid reader and gardener.
Her husband, Lewis W., whom she married July 28, 1951, died June 5, 1992.
She leaves a daughter, Gail L. Owen of Clarion; and a sister, Billie B. Mastelin of Mount Vernon, Ohio. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
