Three weeks ago, in an editorial about the Microsoft Certification program at Kent State Trumbull, we said that the credit status of the courses was changed because the university's contract with its faculty union prohibited subcontracted employees from teaching courses for credit. That is not a requirement of the contract. Rather, university policies mandate that courses for credit be taught by instructors with required credentials, which was not the case with at least one class in the certification program. After this had been called to the attention of KSU's administration by the American Association of University Professors, which represents the Kent State faculty, the program and its faculty were re-evaluated by the university's Educational Policies Council and Academic Senate. The rules governing faculty were revised to state explicitly that all instructors must have a direct relationship with the university and meet all university requirements.
