VERNA JEAN HALVORSEN, 76 Taught in Liberty, Boardman schools



YOUNGSTOWN -- A memorial service was March 10 in Central Baptist Church, Saint Paul, Minn., for Verna Jean Halvorsen, 76, of 2925 Lincoln Drive, Roseville, Minn., formerly of Youngstown, who died of breast cancer March 6 at home.
Mrs. Halvorsen was born May 11, 1924, on a farm near Newell, Iowa, a daughter of Ingvard and Mollie Carstensen Jorgensen.
She graduated from Newell High School and attended Bethel College in St. Paul, where she received an associate of arts degree in 1943.
She and her husband, the Rev. Truman E., whom she married June 15, 1944, served several churches in Minnesota and North Dakota.
In 1961, they moved to Youngstown to serve the Mid-East Baptist Conference. She received a bachelor's degree in home economics from Youngstown State University in 1963, and taught at Liberty High School from 1963 to 1969 and at Boardman High School from 1969 to 1980.
In 1979, she received a master's degree in counseling from YSU, and in 1980 became Dean of Women at Northwestern College in Roseville, Minn. After she retired from Northwestern College, she taught English in Japan. She returned to the United States in 1987 and began spending her winters in Mesa, Ariz., where she was a member of Desert View Baptist Church. She returned to Minnesota in February 2000, residing at Eagle Crest Terrace, Roseville.
Her husband is deceased.
She leaves a son, John of Arden Hills, Minn.; two daughters, Joanne Smith of St. Louis, Mo., and Judy Halvorsen-Whithorne of Oak Ridge, La.; a brother; Arden Jorgensen of Newell, Iowa; three sisters, Dorothy Kahl of West Des Moines, Iowa, Grace Schesvold of Fargo, N.D., and Ruth Francis of Minneapolis, Minn.; and seven grandchildren.
