Breakfast speaker
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Robert A. Stauffer, regional director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, will be the speaker at the YMCA's annual Good Friday Breakfast. The buffet breakfast from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. April 13 includes the U.S. Army Color Guard and music provided by the Sons of Bethel Trio.

Former area manordained in Columbus
COLUMBUS -- James J. Gorski, formerly of Boardman, was one of 11 men ordained to the permanent diaconate recently at St. Joseph's Cathedral, where Gorski is assigned. He's a 1969 graduate of Boardman High School and has worked for IBM for 28 years, where he is an availability manager. He and his wife, Karen, reside in Columbus. Among his duties as deacon are assisting the priest at Mass, preaching the homily, administering Baptism, and presiding at funeral services. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Gorski of Boardman.
Initial sermon
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sharon Ford of Youngstown will present her initial sermon announcing her call to the ministry as an evangelist at 6 p.m. Sundayat Everlife Worship Center of the Assemblies of God.
34th anniversary
STRUTHERS -- Pastor Ralph Burton will celebrate his 34th anniversary as pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church at 4 p.m. Sunday. The guest speaker will be Pastor Earnest Ellis of Antioch Baptist Church in Youngstown.
Youth minister
CANFIELD -- Courtney Lynn Roth, a 2000 graduate of Canfield High School and a freshman at Mount Vernon Nazarene College in Mount Vernon, Ohio, has been named children's minister at Homer Presbyterian Church. She's also active in an after-school program at the church. She's the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Arthur Roth Sr.

Free-book driveby Jewish club
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mitzvah Club at the Jewish Community Center will distribute more than 2,500 used children's books to nonprofit Mahoning Valley agencies during the "The Amazing Totally Free Book Bazaar" from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. April 1. The club consists of seventh- and eighth-grade volunteers who reached out to both the Jewish and non-Jewish communities to obtain books starting Nov. 30, 2000. The club strives to improve the valley through educational and volunteer activities. A "mitzvah" is giving of one's self to perform a good deed and is a biblical commandment and required activity for all Jews. Valley social service agencies in need of books, or agencies that can deliver the books, are invited to the bazaar. Call (330) 746-3251 ext. 152.
Church growth
YOUNGSTOWN -- The American Hungarian Reformed Church, which is now interdenominational, is expanding in two ways.
The church recently installed two new ministers, Pastor Steven Varga of Struthers and Pastor George Dunbar of McDonald. The senior pastor is Ken Sausman.
The church at 925 Mahoning Ave., broke ground last Sunday for a new entrance, enlarged vestibule, and a new elevator and new stairs to the sanctuary and social hall. The estimated cost is $100,000. The work should be done by June. The elevator will allow access from the street to the sanctuary and social hall, making the building more accessible to the handicapped and elderly.
Friends day
AUSTINTOWN -- Austintown Baptist Church will have a "Friends Day" April 8 with the theme, "Touching Hearts, Transforming Lives." Bible study is at 10 a.m. Worship is at 11 a.m. followed by a potluck dinner.
'Good News' crusade
WARREN -- Gary Summerland, a missionary from Pickney, Mich., will be the speaker when Valley Baptist Church has a "Good News Crusade." A service at 10:30 a.m. April 1 will be followed by a dinner. Other services are at 7 p.m. April 1 to 4.
Shrine tour planned
NORTH JACKSON -- The National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon will conduct a Pilgrimage Tour of eight shrines in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin Aug. 28 to Sept. 4. The cost for double occupancy is $899. Call (888) 663-1750.

Easter program
WARREN -- The Easter cantata, "I Am," will be presented at 7 p.m. April 6, 7 and 8 at First Assembly of God Church. Admission is free and there will be interpretation for the deaf. Call (330) 898-1775.
Special music
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The A Cappella Choir and Brass Ensemble from Lenoir-Rhyme College in Hickory, N.C., will perform at 8:15 p.m. April 5 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. The choir is under the direction of Dr. Paul Weber, the head of the college's sacred music program. The choir's current tour includes the premiere of an anthem written by Weber, "Arise, Shine," dedicated to the memory of Pamela Heil of Greenville. The concert will include a remembrance of Holy Week.
Concert scheduled
WARREN -- Carpenter's Tools, a group of contemporary Christian musicians, will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday at Emmanual Evangelical Lutheran Church. The group has toured internationally. The event is free.
Drama team performs
BOARDMAN -- The Lifeline Players drama team from Cedarville University will perform at 9:30 and 11 a.m. April 1 at Evangel Baptist Church. The six-member drama team has performed throughout the United States. Call (330) 782-1151.
