City council handled these items Wednesday:
Appropriated $7,664 to cover extra charges from Gateway Consultants Group, which studied possible downtown arena sites. The money is for hiring a consulting engineer and travel costs. The city's original contract with Gateway was for $21,000 plus the expenses.
Authorized the board of control to contract for Phase III construction at the water department's West Avenue site. The estimated cost is $3.3 million. The project includes a new garage for vehicles and equipment.
Authorized the board of control to sell about 25 acres of former LTV Steel property off Center Street to Shelly & amp; Sands, a large regional paving company. The company will move its operations there, bringing up to 80 additional jobs to the city.
Approved a resolution supporting the rescinding of sales tax and other taxes that occurred because of deregulation of gas, electric or phone service.
Authorized the board of control to buy two cars through the state purchasing contract, not to exceed $42,000, for the sewer and public works departments.
Defeated six old ordinances, one of which was 4 years old, on topics in which council is no longer interested.
