Five other awards were given for helping to beautify the township.
BOARDMAN -- Boardman Civic Association's annual awards night honored people and places that have helped beautify the community.
Monday's awards banquet at Boardman Township Park honored recipients in six categories: community service, new construction building, new construction owner, remodeled building, remodeled building architect and special recognition building.
Dan Slagle, Boardman Township Park executive director, received the community service award. The recipient of this award is traditionally unaware of the award until the night of the ceremony.
Civic association President Curt Seditz said there are no set criteria for selection of the award recipient. He said Slagle has demonstrated exemplary work for the park and the community.
'A jewel': "Boardman Park is a jewel in this township and there is no doubt that his commitment on behalf of the park and community is what keeps it that way," he said. "It just seemed like the appropriate year to recognize Dan Slagle."
Seditz said Slagle's longtime employment with the park, his commitment and his ideas about long-range planning on improvements and upgrades all factored in to his selection for the award.
Other honorees: Other award recipients are Joseph Sylvester Construction Co., new construction building award; Rick Sikora and Jim Yauger, new construction owner; Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Liquore, remodeled building award; Julius R. Tareshawty, remodeled building architect; and Boardman Performing Arts Center, special recognition building award.
