WHAT'S IN STORE Afro-Cuban Arts Festival

FRIDAY
"Introduction to Afro-Cuban Music" by Ruben Alvarez, 9:30-11:30 a.m., Ford Theater, Bliss Hall. For junior high and high school students; by invitation only.
Film "Lista de Espera" by Juan Carlos Tabio, 8:30 p.m., McDonough Museum of Art. A bus breaks down in a small Cuban city. Chaos erupts. Travelers are forced to spend the evening in the bus terminal. Generosity and solidarity save the day.
SATURDAY
Dance workshops with Jim Lepore and Friends, 1-2 p.m. for studio-level dancers and 2-3 p.m. for dancers of all ages, both in Ohio Room, Kilcawley Center. Participants, $5; free admission for observers. Lepore's 1 p.m. workshop will be on Afro-Cuban dance; the 2 p.m. workshop will focus on Cuban social dances, including mambo, cha cha cha and salsa.
Lecture on "Viaje a Cuba -- A Journey Through Cuban Letters" by Dr. Ivania del Pozo of YSU, 1 p.m., Pugsley Room, Kilcawley Center. Dr. del Pozo will trace the changes in Cuban society during the 1990s and their contribution to an intellectual and literary revival.
Lecture on "Healthcare of Children in Cuba" by Dr. Milton Sanchez-Parodi, 2 p.m., Pugsley Room, Kilcawley Center. Dr. Sanchez-Parodi owns Family Medicine in Poland and is associate professor of clinical medicine at Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine.
Cuban Arts Technology Fair, 2:30-3:30 p.m., Gallery, Kilcawley Center. Students from Volney Rogers Junior High School in Youngstown and Campbell Memorial High School will give presentations on technology and the arts in Cuba.
Afro-Cuban percussion clinic with Ruben Alvarez and YSU Latin Percussion Group, 3-5 p.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Musicians from college age to professional levels may join in. Instruments will be provided. Observers are welcome.
Slide show, video and lecture on "Cuba -- Going Back" by Tony Mendoza, 3 p.m., Pugsley Room, Kilcawley Center. Mendoza teaches at Ohio State University and has had his photographs displayed worldwide. He wrote the book "Cuba, Going Back" after traveling to his native country for the first time in 36 years.
Roundtable discussion on "The Current State of U.S.-Cuba Relations: A View from Cuba" with Florentino Batista Gonzalez and Jorge E. Autie Gonzelez, 4 p.m., Ohio Room, Kilcawley Center. Both are secretaries of consular affairs at the Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Authentic Cuban dinner, 5-7 p.m., DeBartolo Stadium Club, Stambaugh Stadium. Dinner by Fusillo Catering; music by YSU Guitar Ensemble. Tickets are $18. A dinner-concert ticket package for $20 is also available. Reservations are required; call (330) 742-3105.
Festival concert, featuring Ruben Alvarez, Jim Lepore and Friends, YSU Latin Percussion Group, YSU Latin Jazz Combo and YSU Guitar Ensemble, 8 p.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students.
