Fire at motel
BOARDMAN -- A Saturday morning fire damaged rooms at the Tower Motel, 5235 Market St. One room had fire damage and two other rooms had smoke damage. The room's occupant suffered a burn while escaping the room but declined treatment. One firefighter got an ember in his eye and another cut his hand. Both were treated and returned to duty. The call came in about 7:35 a.m. The cause is undetermined but doesn't appear suspicious, the fire department said.
Personnel action
BERLIN CENTER -- Western Reserve school board this week approved the hiring of Katie Tieche and Stephen Speece as unpaid assistant softball coaches, added Al Ratini II and Melissa Marshall to its substitution list and granted Dawn Rispinto a continuing contract to teach elementary students.
Library receives grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Public Library of Youngstown & amp; Mahoning County has received a $214,768 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which will pay for purchase of 60 computers and 12 laser printers, plus Internet hardware and wiring in the libraries.
With assets of $21 billion, the Seattle-based foundation has made grants to more than 5,800 libraries in the United States, installed more than 25,000 personal computers and trained 7,000 librarians since 1997.
Gardening workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- "Starting your Garden Early'' will be the topic of a workshop from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 420 Clearmount Drive (corner of Hudson Avenue and Clearmount). The workshop, featuring ideas and tips on starting seeds indoors, is sponsored by Youngstown Weed & amp; Seed, Jubilee Gardens and the Ohio State University Extension Service. Air-show applications
BEAVER, Pa. -- Beaver County Airshow Committee is accepting applications for food booth and exhibitor space at the 2001 Beaver County Airshow, Aug. 11-12. For applications or more information, contact (724) 846-9922. The air show, which began in 1985, features warbirds, aerobatics, military aircraft, ultralights aircraft, a car show and children's activities. Admission is $5 for adults; children 12 and under are admitted free.
Consortium meeting
CHAMPION -- Those interested in joining the Mahoning River Consortium, a nonprofit organization trying to improve the quality of life in the Mahoning Valley, can attend a meeting at 1 p.m. Friday in Room 120 of Kent State University Trumbull Campus.
Membership dues for 2001 are $15 per family, $10 per individual and $5 per senior citizen. Meetings are from 1 to 3 p.m. the third Friday of each month. This month's featured speaker will be Dr. Martin Schmidt, director of environmental remediation for the URS Corporation, Cleveland.
