YOUNGSTOWN Man dies after being shot in Belmont parking lot

There have been seven homicides in Youngstown this year.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 65-year-old man was pronounced dead at 12:35 a.m. today at St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot twice in the back of the head in a North Side convenience store parking lot Thursday evening.
A ruling is pending from the Mahoning County coroner. There have been seven homicides in Youngstown this year.
Police reports identified the victim as Thomas E. Hawk, but did not provide an address for him. Police said they found him lying on his back in the snow beneath a pay telephone in the J & amp;D Supermarket parking lot at 718 Belmont Ave., bleeding heavily from his head after the 6:02 p.m. shooting.
The scene: Police found Hawk unresponsive. The telephone receiver, with a broken earpiece, and a brown hat lay on the ground. Hawk had a green duffel bag with a plastic bag around his left arm, police said.
Police found an unspent round and a spent shell casing nearby. The man who found Hawk while walking north on Belmont called 911 from a second pay phone in the store parking lot and waited for police to arrive.
Detective Sgt. Ron Rodway said Hawk was a drifter who had stayed at the Youngstown Rescue Mission for about a month and a half. Officials have located family members in the Sharpsville, Pa., and Sharon, Pa., area.
Witnesses: Police reports say two witnesses saw two people standing near the victim. The witnesses described them as a white man with short dark hair, blue jeans and either a red coat or shirt; and a black man, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and wearing a dark green shirt and dark pants.
Witnesses also said they saw another short black man with short hair and a dark coat with red sleeves using a pay phone near the victim.
Rodway said police have no witnesses so far and no motive for the shooting.
"Somebody had to have seen something," Rodway said.
