Skateboarding facility
SALEM -- Work is expected to begin in coming weeks on a skateboarding facility in Waterworth Memorial Park. Earlier this week, the parks commission accepted bids for construction work and for apparatus that skateboarders typically use to perform stunts. Contracts went to Joe Lofaro Co. of Girard, $22,000, for construction of a concrete foundation; and to Vertical Skate Parks Inc. of Youngstown, $20,696, for apparatus. Funding for the facility will come from city park department funds.
Woman arrested
AUSTINTOWN -- An Akron woman calling herself "Puerto Rican lady" was arrested on several charges late Friday night in the parking lot of the Rebel 38 truck stop.
Police say the 34-year-old woman was in a truck offering sex for money over the CB radio. The woman gave a false name when approached by officers, who learned she was wanted for missing a court hearing.
Police also say they had warned the woman to stay away from the truck stop in the past. She was arrested for missing the court hearing, trespassing and obstructing official business.
A total of six women have been arrested at the truck stop during the past two weeks. Each faces a variety of charges, including trespassing, soliciting and drug possession.
Action on liquor license
YOUNGSTOWN -- Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ordered a stay Thursday on the termination of the sale of intoxicating liquor at Crestview Inc., doing business as Glenwood Tavern & amp; Patio, 2606 Glenwood Ave., Youngstown.
Glenwood Tavern & amp; Patio was to lose the right to sell intoxicating liquors at its place of business July 2, even though it holds a valid liquor permit because voters turned down a local liquor option that was on the ballot May 8.
The business is contesting results of the election in a suit filed Tuesday because the Mahoning County Board of Elections realigned various Youngstown precincts, including Ward 5, Precinct V, where Glenwood Tavern & amp; Patio operates. Failure to pass the liquor option automatically mandates businesses within the newly defined boundaries with liquor permits to relinquish them.
Prayer breakfast
CAMPBELL -- The Inspirational Choir of Shiloh Baptist Church will have its first prayer breakfast at 9 a.m. Saturday in the fellowship hall. The speaker will be Mary A. Foster, the Youngstown District Missionary for the Church of God in Christ.
City returns fund
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city is returning $266,000 to the state, as required, from a fund associated with a former job training agency.
The city board of control voted Thursday to return the money to the state Department of Jobs and Family Services. The money accrued over the years in a fund for the Youngstown Employment and Training Corp., which handled the city's federal job training programs until a year ago. Shifts in federal policy eliminated the agency, which was replaced by the Mahoning-Columbiana Training Association.
The city didn't have the option of sending the money to the new agency, said Finance Director Barbara Burtner.
Full-time female cop
GOSHEN -- Township trustees have hired Stephanie Daley as a full-time police officer. The township resident was the department's senior part-time officer and becomes its first full-time female officer. She fills the vacancy created when officer Jim Willock became police chief earlier this month.
Three other officers also were added to the squad: Heather Difford, Christopher DeShields and John Porter will work part time. Brian Hobbins and Gregory Schwartz were approved as unpaid reserves.
Pastors Ken Albright and Eric Biddle from Damascus Friends Church were approved as departmental chaplains.
