Man dies in car crash
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Hempfield Township police said a Greenville man died when he failed to negotiate a curve on Pa. Route 18 and his car slammed into a parked backhoe in Sugar Grove Township.
David A. Rissmiller, 47, of Stevenson Road, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8 a.m. Sunday by Cris Loutzenhiser, Mercer County deputy coroner, who said Rissmiller died of a head injury.
Police said Rissmiller was northbound on Route 18 when he failed to make a sharp curve to the right at 1 Anderson Plaza. His car ran off the side of the road into the Millero-Palm Bulldozing and Excavating parking lot at 154 Route 18 and struck a backhoe. He was wearing a seat belt but was partially ejected from his car upon impact, police said.
Drinking water quality
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Pennsylvania-American Water customers in the New Castle service area are now receiving a detailed report on the quality of their drinking water. The report contains information about the source of supply, what things Pennsylvania-American tests for in customers' drinking water, what items were detected and their levels and other information. Locally, water from the Shenango River is treated in at the New Castle plant and distributed to about 35,000 people in New Castle, South New Castle Borough, and Hickory, Neshannock, Shenango, Taylor and Union townships.
Red Cross blood drive
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Red Cross workers are hoping to collect 200 units of blood from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Parish Center. Last year's drive collected 169 units. Each unit can help several people who need platelets, plasma and red cells for transfusions.
Each person giving blood will receive a T-shirt from Zambelli Internationale and pizza from Pizza Joe's.
New truck terminal
FARRELL, Pa. -- B-Line Enterprises Inc. of Wheatland will get a $100,000 loan to assist in the construction of a new truck terminal and warehouse on Broadway Avenue in Farrell. Farrell City Council approved the loan Monday to the owners, Gary and Kathleen Buskirk, at 5 percent interest over 10 years. The project has a total cost of $500,000, with B-Line putting up $105,000 of its own money and borrowing the rest from local economic development agencies, city officials said. Officials didn't say when construction will begin.
Prescription drug abuse
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- John J. Burke, commander of Ohio's Warren County Drug Task Force, talked to Lawrence County doctors, pharmacists and health-care providers about protecting themselves from those who want to use prescription drugs illegally.
District Attorney Matthew Mangino said this talk was the first in a series on prescription drug abuse. Future talks will be open to the public and law enforcement officials.
Business aid increases
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Greenville Business Incubator will see its state financial aid increase by more than 20 percent in the new state budget. State Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, said the incubator at 12 N. Diamond St. got $45,000 from the state Department of Community and Economic Development last year. That will increase to $55,000, he said.
