Senior Independence offers suggestions on safety
Tips will help seniors prevent falls in their homes.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Independence, 1110 Fifth Ave., is offering safety suggestions for seniors.
During June, which is observed as National Safety Month, seniors could take steps to make their homes safer.
This checklist may help senior citizens avoid falls:
U Have a lamp or light switch that is within easy reach without getting out of bed.
U Use night lights in the bedroom, bathroom and hallways.
U Keep a flashlight handy.
U Have light switches at both ends of hallways and stairways. Install handrails on both sides of stairs.
UTurn on the lights as you enter your home after dark.
UUse nonslip adhesive strips or a mat in the shower and bathtub.
U Consider an elevated toilet seat.
U Wear nonslip low-heeled shoes or slippers that fit snugly. Don't walk around in stocking feet.
UKeep telephone and electrical cords out of pathways.
U Tack down rugs and glue vinyl flooring so they lie flat. Remove or replace rugs and runners that tend to slip and slide.
UPaint outside stairs with a mixture of sand and paint for better traction. Keep outdoor walkways clear and well lighted.
U Watch alcohol intake. More than two drinks a day can cause unsteadiness.
UHave hearing and eyesight tested. Inner ear problems can affect balance.
U Review medications with your pharmacist and doctor. Some drugs, including over-the-counter medications, can make you drowsy, dizzy or unsteady.
