Ohioan gets music post with Indiana University
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Grammy-winning opera singer Sylvia McNair has been appointed to a newly created post as executive adviser for outreach with the Indiana University School of Music.
McNair, 45, received a master's degree in music from Indiana in 1983.
Her three-year appointment, to begin July 1, is not expected to interfere with her singing career, which has brought her worldwide acclaim.
A native of Mansfield, Ohio, McNair worked briefly as a classical radio announcer as a graduate student at Indiana. She also worked with conductors John Nelson and Robert Shaw, both of whom offered her career opportunities.
She received an honorary doctorate from Indiana three years ago and has sung with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra many times, when Nelson was music director and during current director Raymond Leppard's 14 years in the job.
The soprano also sang in Indianapolis last December at the orchestra's "Classical Christmas" concert at Scottish Rite Cathedral.
