YOUNGSTOWN -- Children ages 6 to 13 may experience the lifestyle of the Mahoning Valley's earliest settlers during a Summer Fun-Cational Children's Program from July 23-27 at Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, 151 W. Wood St. Sessions will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Hands-on activities will include making rag rugs and candles, husking corn and square dancing. Registration is required; call (330) 743-5934.
Musical debut
ASHTABULA -- "Zombie Prom," a rock 'n' roll musical that was co-written by Boardman native John Dempsey, will be produced by Ashtabula Arts Center's Straw Hat Theatre. Performances will be for three weekends, beginning Friday, at the arts center, 2928 W. 13th St. Call (440) 964-3396 for tickets and information.
"Zombie Prom" features good-girl Toffee, who ends her relationship with bad boy Jonny. He kills himself by jumping into a nuclear power plant but comes back to life so he can graduate with his high school class and attend the prom. The school principal is against him; a tabloid reporter takes up his cause. The musical ends with a surprise twist.
Dempsey, a former teacher, has also worked with world-renowned producer Cameron Mackintosh of "Cats" fame on the stage version of "The Witches of Eastwick." It debuted in London.
