KEYSTONE CLIPS Board to spotlight academic awards

Hermitage school directors say that academic excellence will get the same consideration as athletic excellence when it comes to displaying trophies and awards in the hallways of Hickory High School when the building renovation project is complete.
Duane Piccirilli, school board president, said at a board meeting last week that athletic coaches have been told the board plans to have academic awards prominently displayed, and the coaches are already jockeying for space for their stuff. "We have to arm-wrestle them [for space]," he quipped.
Looking for donations: The Medical Equipment Recycling Program of UPMC Horizon needs donated shower chairs, extended tub benches, scales and electric chair lifts.
The program, funded primarily by grants from the UPMC Horizon Foundation and donations, accepts donated durable medical equipment, restores it and then donates it to people who lack the financial means or insurance coverage to buy those items new.
The program has recently opened a drop-off site for donated equipment in the Greenville area on the second floor of the Good Shepherd Center, 144 Main St. It will be open from 1 to 2 p.m. every Wednesday or by appointment. Appointments can be arranged by calling the program office at (724) 347-3605.
A similar drop-off site will open soon in the Grove city area. The organization is looking for some volunteers to assist in its office at the Salvation Army building on Fisher Hill Street in Sharon and to expand the hours of operation at the new Greenville site.
Election site: It looks like most of Lawrence County residents are checking cyberspace to find out who will be their elected leaders.
County Commissioner Brian Burick said the election Web site, which gives live updates of results on election night, was visited 19,080 times during the week of the May primary election.
That's about a four-fold increase from the November 2000 election, where 5,009 people visited the site, he said.
