ON CAMPUS College news and notes

Youngstown State: Adam Lewis, a senior on the McDonald High track team this season and a four-year letterman, will run for Youngstown State. Lewis competed in both hurdles events and also on the 4x400-meter and 4x800 relays. The 4x800 relay placed third in the state meet this year. He also was a state qualifier in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the 4x400 relay. As a sophomore in 1999, Lewis was a state champion as a member of the 4x800 relay. As a junior, he was on the 4x400 relay that took fifth at state. He also won football and basketball letters at McDonald. In football, Lewis made the All-Trumbull County and All-Inter-County League first teams. Lewis also is an outstanding student with a 3.5 grade-point average, with membership in the National Honor Society. He is the recipient of a leadership scholarship at YSU, and will major in civil engineering.
Westminster: Jim Polish, a senior on the Austintown Fitch High baseball team this year, will attend Westminster. A pitcher, outfielder and first baseman, Polish batted .390 this season despite battling an illness. A two-year letterman, he was named Junior Varsity Pitcher of the Year his sophomore season with a 6-1 record. Polish also won two letters in football and one in basketball. The son of Debra and James Polish, Jim is planning to major in education.
Brooks LeViere of New Castle, a football and baseball standout for Ellwood City High, will attend Westminster. The son of Connie and Doug LeViere, Brooks plans to major in biology and secondary education. He won two letters in football. As a senior, he rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries (a 3.9-yard average) and three touchdowns, and caught six passes for 237 yards (a 39.5-yard average) and four TDs. He was named to the All-Parkway Conference team as an honorable mention as a flanker. In baseball, he won three letters as an outfielder. His senior year, he batted .386 (22-for-57) and led the team in hits (22), runs (21) and home runs (3). He also had 12 RBIs, four doubles, four steals and one triple.
Kurt Latta (Wilmington), a senior on the Westminster baseball team, was one of two Titans named to the ECAC Division II South All-Star Team. Latta had a .288 batting average (30-for-104), to help Westminster to an 18-14-1 record. He also scored 15 runs, drove in 11, had eight stolen bases, three doubles and two home runs. Latta also was a two-time selection to the Verizon Academic All-District team.
Ashland: James Phillips, a high school All-American wrestler from Howland, will attend Ashland. Phillips is expected to compete at 125 pounds. The son of Terri and Brad Phillips, James placed third in the state this year after placing sixth last year. A three-time state qualifier, Phillips was named Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Wrestler of the Year in 2001. His career record at Howland was 120-30, and he holds the school record for most career wins. Phillips also was a member of Team Ohio as a junior and senior. As a junior, he won 112-pound titles at the NHSCA National Open and the AAU Tournament of Champions.
Baldwin-Wallace: B.J. DeCerbo, the top hitter on the Austintown Fitch High baseball team this year, will attend Baldwin-Wallace and major in secondary education. A first- and third-baseman and team captain, DeCerbo won three baseball letters at Fitch. This spring, he won the Highest Batting Average award (.417), also scoring 17 runs and driving in 15. He also produced a .700 slugging percentage and .624 on-base average. On defense, DeCerbo made only three errors in 181 chances for .983 fielding percentage. The son of Sandra and Bob DeCerbo, B.J. served as class president as a sophomore, junior and senior.
Misericordia: Meghan Crowley (Austintown Fitch), a sophomore on the women's track and field team, was selected to the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference All-Academic team. Crowley is a physical therapy major.
