NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers split, gain first win

Mahoning Valley whipped Utica in the opener but was edged in the nightcap.
UTICA, N.Y. -- Outfielder John Van Every collected a single, triple and home run, good for three RBIs, as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their first game of the season in the New York-Penn League 10-3 over the Utica Blue Sox on Friday at Donovan Stadium, in the opener of a doubleheader.
In a rain-shortened second game, the Blue Sox defeated the Scrappers 3-2 in 41/2 innings.
Since Thursday's game was rained out, the two teams played two seven-inning games Friday.
The Scrappers scored four runs on just three hits in the first inning of the opener, and a three-run second made it 7-0.
The Scrappers scored three more times in the fifth for a 10-1 lead. Mahoning Valley had 11 hits in the game.
Four-hitter: Devin Rogers, Mark Turnbow and Ron Colvard combined to throw a four-hitter at Utica in the opener. Turnbow got the win in relief.
Keith Lillash and Miguel Quintana each had two hits for the Scrappers, and catcher Angel Bastardo doubled.
Bastardo and Curtis Gay each drove in two runs.
The Blue Sox scored two solo runs in the nightcap to take an early 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Mahoning Valley shortstop Lillash doubled, and Quintana hit a home run over the center field fence to tie it 2-2.
Utica scored in the bottom of the fourth to assume a 3-2 lead. After the Scrappers failed to score in the fifth, rain interrupted the game, and the tarp was pulled over the field.
About an hour later it was called, leaving the Blue Sox with three wins over Mahoning Valley in the four-game series.
The Scrappers had just three hits in the game, while Utica scored its three runs on five hits.
