SHARON, Pa. -- The Shenango Valley Enterprise Zone Corp. has narrowed its search for a new coordinator.
Mayor Thomas Stanton of Wheatland, a member of the zone's board of directors, had held that post for eight years but announced last month that he will resign June 30, saying the agency's executive committee didn't like the job he was doing.
He said he got an unfavorable job review by the executive committee and felt the job had been stripped of authority.
Stanton said he has since received letters of support from 15 companies that have done business with the enterprise zone, commending him for the job he has done.
He said he feels those letter-writers are better qualified to judge his work than the zone's executive committee.
Another post: He said he intends to run for the post of president of the board, which elects officers in July.
Mayor Robert T. Price of Sharon, the current board president and head of the executive committee, has declined to comment on Stanton's resignation.
He has said that he won't seek re-election as board president because he is leaving the mayor's office Dec. 31.
Price said the search for a successor to Stanton netted 12 applications.
That list has been narrowed to five people, most of them local, who will be interviewed by the executive committee July 9.
The committee should be prepared to come to the board with a recommendation at the July 18 meeting, he said.
About the job: It's a part-time job that was paying Stanton $1,000 a month. It primarily involves serving as a liaison between the agencies and companies that are seeking or have secured enterprise zone loans.
Price said Stanton will have some competition in his bid for the presidency. George Becker, the current vice president, has said he wants the seat.
