Mang is TCL chief
John Mang, a long time area official, was named Commissioner of the Tri-County League.
Mang has 30 years of experience officiating and has made numerous trips to officiate at the state level.
He retired from Commercial Intertech after 32 years and currently works as an associate at Sam's Club in Boardman.
The Tri-County League is comprised of Columbiana, Crestview, East Palestine, Leetonia, Lisbon, Sebring, Southern and United.
Two are medalists
CHARDON -- Kelly Baytos of Warren shot 39-42--81 to win the girls 12-15 division in the tournament at Chapel Hills.
Chuck Scarbrough of Warren was medalist in the boys 16-19 age group with 35-35-17. Joe Zupelia, of Struthers finished third having shot 35-38--73.
McCall wins qualifier
BARBERTON -- Ohio University's Ashley McCall, a graduate of Canfield High School, shot 39-30--69 to win the Kenny Novak qualifier at Brookside Golf Course.
McCall's backside 30 included a stretch of six holes at 6-under par with an eagle and four birdies.
Her 3-under par score advanced her to the Kenny Novak Memorial Tournament in August at the Walden Golf and Tennis Club in Aurora.
Pintaric wins twice
GARRETTSVILLE -- Local drivers fared well in Sports Car Club of America regional races last weekend at Nelson Ledges.
Bill Pintaric Jr. of Liberty, driving a Datsun 510, won twice in the GT 4 class while Mack Stambaugh of Salem won and was runner-up in the Sports 2000 class. Bill Kasmer of Berlin Center placed third in the same category.
Boardman's Brad Barnhouse was eighth and 10th in the ITA class while Canfield's Csaba Bujdoso, driving a GTI, finished third and 12th in ITB.
Constantin Gheorghe of Canfield was runnerup twice in Formula Continental while Chase Navarre of Boardman was eighth twice in Formula Vee.
Miller is judge atHungary fights
MINERAL RIDGE -- Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a boxing judge for the WBO world feathwerweight and lightweight championship boxing matches in Budapest, Hungary.
Julio Chacon of Argentina beat Istvan Kovach of Hungary for the featherweight title and Arthur Grigorian of Germany beat Aldo Rios of Argentina for the lightweight crown.
Miller is an international boxing judge for both amateur and professional fights and he'll be a judge at the Niles boxing show Sunday.
Boardman girls in national meet
RALEIGH, N. Car. -- Six members of the Boardman High School girls track and field team traveled to the campus of North Carolina St. for the National High School outdoor championship meet.
Freshman Amber Bland jumped 5-feet, 61/2 inches to place eighth after winning the Ohio state meet with a leap of 5-9. The Spartan 4x800 relay team of Brittany Durkin, Sarah Grabert, Monica Cuevas and Gina Mavarikis placed 19th with a time of 9:35.63.
Cuevas took 10th in the 400 with 57.5, the second best time of her career.

New Hiram coach
HIRAM -- Hiram College has appointed Ellen Dempsey to the position of head volleyball coach. She has 15 years of experience including 11 years as head coach.
She is currently the assistant athletic director at the Univ. of Maine and was the head volleyball coach at Ohio University for six years.

U.S. scores 2-0 win
FOXBORO, Mass. -- Ante Razov scored just 74 seconds into the game, and the United States moved to the verge of qualifying for next year's World Cup by beating Trinidad and Tobago 2-0.
The United States (4-0-1), the leader in the North and Central American and Caribbean region, increased its total to 13 points, probably one or two short of the amount needed to qualify for next year's tournament in Japan and South Korea.
N. Mexico St.on probation
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The NCAA, citing what the chairman of its Committee on Infractions termed "a rather serious case," placed the New Mexico State's men's basketball program on four years' probation and imposed other sanctions.
