YOUNGSTOWN -- "No, really, I had the toilet paper in my purse when I came in the store." A clerk at the Dairy Mart on Mahoning Avenue heard that explanation around 1:30 a.m. today from a woman suspected of stuffing two rolls of toilet paper into her purse. After the woman left, the clerk discovered that seven light bulbs that she'd taken off a shelf were gone, too, police reports show.
Water pistol assault
YOUNGSTOWN -- Inside the Taco Bell at 3726 Market St. just before 9 p.m. Monday, two young men with white rags covering their faces aimed large capacity water pistols at the manager and squirted him with an unknown liquid. The manager told police that the liquid had a chemical smell. The suspects ran out and made their getaway in a green Volvo and a maroon Pontiac. No injuries were reported. Police have the identity of the Volvo driver.
Religious music stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- The burglar who entered a house in the 200 block of East Delason Avenue on Monday evening got religion. The resident told police that 26 gospel CDs, worth about $17 each, were stolen. The resident discovered that someone had placed an old tire under a window and stood on it to enter the house, then left through a rear door.
Teen reports carjacking
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 16-year-old Boardman boy told police he was carjacked Monday night while stopped at a traffic light on the Madison Avenue expressway at Martin Luther King Boulevard. The Homestead Drive boy said he floored the gas pedal when the suspect approached and ordered him out of the car, but the suspect grabbed the steering wheel. The boy was pulled from the car, a 1992 Pontiac, and his passenger, a 17-year-old Poland girl, ran from it. They called police from an apartment on Madison Avenue.
Chase ends in arrest
CANFIELD -- Police say a North Briarcliff Drive man faces charges of speeding and failure to comply after leading them on a short chase early Saturday morning.
Police tried to pull the 63-year-old man over on Blueberry Hill Drive around 4:50 a.m. Saturday. They said he was driving 39 miles per hour in a 25 miles-per-hour zone. However, the man ignored police lights and sirens and continued to drive to his house on North Briarcliff.
Once in his driveway, the man got out of his car, and a Canfield officer got out of a cruiser, pulled his revolver, and told the man to get back into the car.
Police reports say the man was uncooperative, and repeatedly directed profanities at the officers and punched the hood of a cruiser. He was eventually handcuffed.
The man told police he drove to his house because he wanted to deal with the officers on his property.
Local Dems to meet
POLAND -- The Democrats of the 17th District will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at Poland Community Baseball Association Hall on Sheridan Road. The group will discuss Democratic Party reforms.
Counterfeit check case
AUSTINTOWN -- A man representing a Cleveland business bought $6,600 worth of car parts from Player Wire Wheels Ltd. on Meridian Road, using a counterfeit check. Police reports say the parts were delivered to the Cleveland business in late May. On Monday a security officer at a Cleveland bank called Player Wire Wheels to say the check was counterfeit. The case is still under investigation.
