MAHONING COUNTY New reading program at library targets teens

The Poland Library is expected to open in late September or early October.
BOARDMAN -- A new program designed for teen-agers and young adults is in the works at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.
A report on TeenXTreme was announced at a recent library trustees meeting. The program begins Oct. 14 in conjunction with Teen Read Week.
The program focuses on getting teen-agers interested in reading, said Janet Loew, communications and public relations director for the library. She said they're still working on the specifics of the program, but it might include bands, games and special music programs.
The team putting the program together applied for funds from the Ohio Library Foundation's Drew Carey Fund, established from Carey's $532,000 winnings on the television show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."
More: In other news, library board trustees learned that the Poland Library construction in on schedule and on budget. If nothing changes, the library might open in late September or early October.
The Council of Friends of the Library plans to open a book store on the lower level, and the trustees approved an expenditure of no more than $50,000 to complete it.
Loew said almost 13,000 of the new I-Cards, which double as copy and computer printer debit cards, were issued in the first month.
Nearly 3,500 children registered for the library system's summer reading program in the first two weeks, about half of the 7,008 who registered all of last year.
