Locals do wellat YHEC event
Members of the Columbiana Pathfinders and Columbiana Hawkeyes teams turned in excellent results at the recent 2001 Ohio Youth Hunter Education Challenge.
The event, held in Carroll County, pitted youths in senior and junior divisions competing in rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun, archery, orienteering, safety trail, exam and wildlife identification categories.
Top senior team member overall was Bryan Hum of the Pathfinders with 2,112 points. Top junior overall was David Tobin of the Hawkeyes. Nathan Mullen of the Hawkeyes came in third place top junior.
Other local team members and their finishes included: Rifle, senior - Bryan Hum, 1st, Jerrod Miller, 3rd; junior - Bill McGuire, 2nd.
Muzzleloader, senior - Judson Sanor, 2nd, Bryan Hum, 3rd; David Tobin, 1st, Nathan Miller, 3rd.
Shotgun, senior - Bryan Hum, 1st; junior - David Tobin, 1st, Bill McGuire, 3rd.
Archery, senior - Bryan Hum, 1st, Jerrod Miller, 3rd; junior - Nathan Mullen.
Orienteering, senior - Bryan Hum, 2nd, Judson Sanor, 3rd; junior - David Tobin, 1st.
Safety trail, senior - Bryan Hum, 2nd; junior - Andy Clutter, 3rd.
Exam, senior - Bryan Hum, 2nd; junior - David Tobin, 1st, Nathan Mullen, 2nd.
Wildlife identification, senior - Bryan Hum, 3rd.
The Pathfinders (Chris Dattilio, Jamie Garrod, Bryan Hum, Jerrod Miller, Judson Sanor and Justin Ross) placed second in the top teams senior category and the Hawkeyes (Andy Clutter, Bill McGuire, Samantha Miller, Nathan Mullen, David Tobin and Candie Grubbs) were first in the junior division.
A number of the Ohio YHEC participants will be going to New Mexico for the 2001 NRA International Youth Hunter Education Challenge, July 29-August 3.
PENNSYLVANIA.
Bobcat permit decision.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has decided to award 520 permits for the 20001-2002 bobcat hunting-furtaking seasons at a public drawing at the Harrisburg headquarters on Sept. 14.
In 2000, the first year for the bobcat hunt, only 290 such licenses were offered.
Applications will be accepted beginning July from holders of resident furtaker licenses or junior and senior combination licenses along with a $5 fee. Licenses may be applied for through the Internet at www.pgc.state.pa.us as of July 1.
Bobcat hunting season is Oct. 13, 2001 through Feb. 23. Trapping starts one day earlier through Feb. 23.
