MAHONING VALLEY Local girls win highest Scout awards

One of the troop service projects was having a sports clinic for younger Girl Scouts.
NILES -- Fifteen local girls have earned the Gold Award, Girl Scouting's highest honor.
Less than one percent of all girls in Girl Scouting complete the requirements for the award, which is comparable to the Eagle Award in Boy Scouting. The girls are from troops 292, 308, 320 and 557, all affiliated with Lake to River Girl Scout Council, headquartered in Niles.
The Gold Award service project must represent at least 50 hours of effort.
The service project for Troop 292 consisted of developing and implementing a first-aid program for Canfield children who participated in the city's community summer program. The girls also participated in the first-aid program that takes place during the Canfield Fair. Their leaders are Bonnie Lohr and Sue Sorice
The award recipients are:
U Michelle Courtney, a daughter of Dave and Shelly Courtney, lives on Dartmouth Drive in Canfield and has completed her sophomore year at Canfield High School. She has been a Scout member seven years and has received the Girl Scout Silver Award.
U Christine M. Lohr of South Broad Street in Canfield is the daughter of Robert III and Bonnie Lohr and has completed her sophomore year at Canfield High School. A member of Girl Scouts for 11 years, she has also earned the Silver Award.
U Miranda Mae Morvay of Willow Way in Canfield has recently completed her sophomore year at Canfield High School and is the daughter of Karen and John Morvay. A Girl Scout for 11 years, she has earned the Silver Award.
U Dayna Vivacqua, a daughter of Joe and Linda Vivacqua, of Montgomery Drive in Canfield is a sophomore at Canfield High School. She has been a Girl Scout for 11 years and also earned the Silver Award.
U Lisa Clarke of Court Street in Canfield is a daughter of Barbara Pagani and John Clarke and recently completed her sophomore year at Canfield High School. She has been a member of Girl Scouts for eight years and has earned the Silver Award.
U Catherine VanFleet of Bradford Drive in Canfield is the daughter of Ann and Ted VanFleet and has completed her sophomore year at Canfield High School. A member of Girl Scouts for eight years, she has received the Silver Award.
Troop 308 selected a service project that consisted of researching and designing a trail guide and signage for the new interpretive trail and Braille trail system at Austintown Township Park. Their leaders are Jackie Cline and Jacqui Nolder.
Award recipients are:
U Ashley Fowler of Cavalcade Drive in Austintown and graduate of Fitch High School is a daughter of Raymond L. Fowler and Jacquelyn Cline. She has been a Girl Scout for 12 years. Other awards she has earned are the Silver Award, the Cadette Leadership Award and the Senior Leadership Award.
U Nicole Valley of Lake Road in Austintown, a daughter of Nicholas and Maria Valley, is a recent graduate of Ursuline High School. She has been a member of the troop for 12 years and has earned other awards including the Silver Award and the Senior Girl Scout Leadership Award.
U Jennifer Ann Wells of South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown and recent graduate of Fitch High School is a daughter of Jerry and Barbara Wells. A Girl Scout for 12 years, she has received several honors and awards including the Silver Award, the Cadette Girl Scout Leadership Award and the Senior Leadership Award.
U Missy Hanek of Wedgewood Drive in Austintown is the daughter of Jim and Karen Hanek and a graduate of Fitch High School. A Girl Scout for 13 years, she has received awards and honors including the Silver Award.
U Rynette Nolder of Lake Road, Austintown, is the daughter of Dave and Jacqui Nolder and a Fitch graduate. She has been in Scouting 12 years and earned the Silver award, Cadette Girl Scout Leadership Award and Senior Leadership Award.
Troop 320 award recipients selected a service project that consisted of having an eight-week sports clinic for younger Scouts at Western Reserve Middle School, Warren. During the clinic, the girls were introduced to karate, basketball and volleyball and learned about healthy eating and exercise.
Troop leaders are Karen Lubert and Kathy Longley.

U Ashley Lubert of Adelaide N.E. in Warren is the daughter of Gary and Karen Lubert and is a graduate of Warren Christian School. She has been a Girl Scout for 12 years and has received the Silver Award and the Senior Leadership Award.
U Sarah Barba of Rolling Meadows Drive in Warren is the daughter of William and Nancy Barba and is a graduate of Howland High School. A Girl Scout for nine years, she has received the Silver Award and the Senior Leadership Award.
U Susan Dykes, daughter of Janice and Russell Dykes, of Anderson Avenue in Warren is a recent graduate of Howland High School. She has been a Girl Scout for 12 years and has earned the Silver Award and the Senior Leadership Award.
U Heather Rogers of Hayes Avenue in McDonald is the daughter of Pam Rogers. She is a member of Troop 557, which is led by her mother, and she has been a member of the Girl Scouts for 10 years.
Her service project was to create a Girl Scout museum in the Niles council office by researching, documenting, cataloging and displaying many Scout artifacts.
