WARREN -- Elysia Williams of Warren reported that an unidentified person shot her in the upper left arm early Thursday morning as she sat in the passenger seat of a car parked at 790 Fourth St., police said. She was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Reports on her condition were unavailable.
Board will borrowfor sports complex
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Weathersfield Board of Education has approved borrowing money to pay for the construction of the Joe Lane Sports Complex.
The board will borrow $950,000 through Farmers National Bank for 14 years. Total cost is estimated at $1.3 million.
On Wednesday, the board hired Janice Cross to teach at Seaborn Elementary at the starting rate of $27,213 and Leslie Core to teach vocal music at the master's level rate of $35,240.
Supplemental positions were given to Jean Cheredar, softball coach; Leslie Core, high school vocal music director, and Lori Ciavarella, flag line adviser.
Victim is all wet
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman in her parked car on Hudson Avenue near Sheridan Elementary School was the victim of a drive-by squirting around 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
The woman told police a man pulled up beside her in a white Pontiac Grand Am, took out a water pistol and zapped her several times.
Toymaker sued in fire
YOUNGSTOWN -- A city couple whose home burned when a child's toy caught fire has sued the toymaker.
Karla Hoyt and Gerald Hodge of St. Louis Avenue are seeking $60,000 in compensatory damages and $2 million in punitive damages from Fisher-Price of East Aurora, N.Y.
They say that because it malfunctioned, a child's Power Wheels car caught fire while its battery was charging on their front porch.
The fire quickly spread, destroying the house and nearly all its contents. The couple says Fisher-Price knew about the defective wiring but did nothing to warn customers or correct the problem.

Down payment help
YOUNGSTOWN -- The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has announced a new program that allows Ohio's housing officials to provide families with up to a year's worth of housing vouchers to be used toward a down payment and closing costs on a home.
Previously, a family could be helped with monthly mortgage payments, not with down payments. The new program is part of HUD's Section 8 housing choice voucher program, which assists low-income households with rental housing in the private market.
The local Section 8 office, operated by the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority, is at 133 W. Boardman St.
