Columbiana derby is set for Saturday

COLUMBIANA -- The seventh annual Super Kids Classic soapbox derby will be at noon Saturday at Firestone Park.
The event is sponsored by Vietnam Veterans Columbiana County Chapter 40 and Veterans of Foreign Wars York Drexler Post 5532, Washingtonville. In the event of rain, the race will be at noon Sunday.
The derby is for physically and mentally challenged children 9 to 16. The veterans also sponsor a recognition banquet for the racers in July.
The race is funded by area businesses and individuals who buy the derby cars and pay to have them painted and striped. Veterans and other volunteers help the racers and their friends and family build the cars.
Dianah Jordan, owner of Paperback House in Salem, is sponsoring a car to be driven by her 9-year-old grandson, Aaron Post. It is the first time she has sponsored a car.
Jordan said she and her husband, Dwight, think the derby is a unique nonprofit event.
"It's something different to do to help someone out," she said. "I've never been to a soapbox derby. It sounds like fun."
