YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County Common Pleas Court judge has denied a request for a new trial for Tina Davis. A jury convicted the 37-year-old Powers Way woman of felonious assault last month.
She ran over an Austintown man with her car in the parking lot of a Boardman restaurant. Her lawyers asked for another trial based on new evidence they discovered after the trial.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum will sentence Davis on Friday.
Shooting injures man
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 19-year-old Hilton Avenue man was in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the lower right abdomen at about 9 p.m. Wednesday. Anthony Tucker told police he was sitting on his porch when he heard a noise and felt a burning sensation in his stomach.
Tucker did not see his assailant. Police could not locate a weapon or shell casings.
Grand jury indicts 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown men were indicted by a federal grand jury in connection with a scheme to illegally obtain a firearm from a local gun shop.
Dewaylyn C. Colvin, 19, and Wesley Stephens Jr., 45, were charged Wednesday with conspiracy and aiding and abetting with others to make false statements to a firearms dealer. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Cleveland said that beginning May 17, the two conspired to obtain a firearm from The Shooting Gallery in Youngstown by making false statements to the dealer.
If convicted, they face 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines. The case was investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Motorcycle, SUV crash
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Alphonse Then, 61, of Germany was treated at St. Francis Hospital for cuts and bruises to his elbows and Andreas Gaertner, no age available, of Aiken Road, New Castle, was treated at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh for unspecified injuries.
Police said the men were hurt when their motorcycle and a Chevy Blazer collided at 9:23 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Route 224 near Parkstown Lanes in Union Township.
Blazer driver Eric R. Sabo of Sable Court, Youngstown, was pulling out of a convenience store parking lot and went into the path of the motorcycle. Gaertner, who was traveling west, tried to stop, but could not avoid hitting the Blazer, police said. Sabo and a passenger, who was not identified by police, were not hurt.
Police said they have not decided if charges will be filed.
Officer's hiring OK'd
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Village council approved hiring Donald A. Rohrbaugh of Austintown as a part-time police officer.
Rohrbaugh, 35, has worked in law enforcement with Mahoning County, Milton Township, and Mill Creek Park.
He will start at a wage of $8.97 per hour.
Facing robbery counts
HUBBARD -- A 36-year-old Youngstown man was charged Wednesday with three counts of aggravated robbery.
Roosevelt Perry of Ohio Avenue is in the Trumbull County Jail under $30,000 bond.
Township police Detective Mike Begeot said Perry is accused of Sunday's holdup of Save-A-Step Food Mart at Jacobs and Hubbard roads and a store customer.
Begeot said a tip led to Perry's arrest. Perry is also being held for a possible parole violation from a conviction on a similar charge.
YSU professor to speak
WARREN -- Youngstown State University professor Scott Martin, Ph.D., will speak at the next Mahoning River Consortium meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday in Room 120 at Kent State University Trumbull Campus.
Martin will present components for a watershed action plan for the Mahoning River basin.
