New Middletown councilOKs hiring of officer
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Village council approved hiring Donald A. Rohrbaugh of Austintown on Wednesday as a part-time police officer.
Rohrbaugh, 35, has worked in law enforcement with Mahoning County, Milton Township, and Mill Creek Park.
He will start at a wage of $8.97 per hour.
Associate prof takesnew Penn State post
SHARON, Pa. -- Dr. Kathleen Mastrian, associate professor of nursing at Penn State Shenango, has been named acting director of academic affairs at the campus effective Aug. 1.
She will temporarily replace Dr. Fred Leeds in that post. Leeds has been named interim campus executive officer effective July 1 to replace Dr. William C. Puffer, who has resigned from that post.
Mastrian joined Penn State Shenango in 1979 and, in addition to her teaching duties, serves as nursing coordinator at the campus.
Annual dinner set
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Historical Society's annual dinner and meeting will begin at 6 p.m. June 21 in the Anderson House library.
Tom Munnell will cater the dinner, which will take place 6:30 p.m. at the Helen Black Miller Memorial Chapel in Mercer.
In the program after the dinner, Daisybell Thomas-Quinney will portray Harriet Tubman. Cost for the dinner is $15 per person. Submit payment and reservation by Friday to the Mercer County Historical Society, 119 South Pitt St., Mercer.
Set of hikes planned
PORTERSVILLE, Pa. -- A Hell's Hollow history hike will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hell's Hollow parking lot in McConnell's Mill State Park, on U.S. Route 422. The hike will explore the industrial and natural history of the area with an emphasis on the Lawrence Blast Furnace, one of several furnaces in the region used to produce iron.
A Family Discovery hike will start at 2 p.m. Sunday along the Alpha Pass Trail near the Old Mill. A naturalist will give families a list of items to look for along the trail.
Board seeks principal
BESSEMER, Pa. -- The Mohawk Area School Board needs an elementary principal.
The board has accepted the resignation of Anna Paladina, effective July 2.
Paladina, who has been with the district six years, has accepted a position as program specialist at the Beaver County Intermediate Unit.
The board also has approved retirements of elementary teacher Dolores Summers, who has been with the district about 20 years, and physical education teacher David Bixler, who worked for the district 35 years.
The board adopted a $15.7 million general operating budget for the 2001-02 school year, a 4-percent increase. Taxes will be maintained at 63.2 mills.
Memorial service
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County corrections officers will have a memorial service in conjunction with this week's National Correctional Peace Officers Week. The service is planned for noon Friday in front of the Lawrence County Jail, 111 South Milton St. The public is invited.
Trial request denied
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County Common Pleas Court judge has denied a request for a new trial for Tina Davis. A jury convicted the 37-year-old Powers Way woman of felonious assault last month.
She ran over an Austintown man with her car in the parking lot of a Boardman restaurant.
Her lawyers asked for another trial based on new evidence they discovered after the trial. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum will sentence Davis on Friday.
