LAWRENCE COUNTY Prison in search of woman to act as full-time manager

The money saved in union differentials would pay for the post.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Lawrence County Prison Board wants to hire another full-time jail manager -- preferably a woman.
Ed Fosnaught, board president, said there are no women in supervisory spots at the jail, but there are some in the records department.
Prison board members are hoping that will change with the captain's position they created at Wednesday's monthly meeting.
"Females are strongly urged to apply for the job," Fosnaught said.
But before anyone is hired, the new position must be approved by the county salary board. The board's next meeting has not been scheduled.
Last month, prison board members talked about creating the job to help eliminate the need to use union members to run the facility when the warden and other managers are not available. Human resources director Susan Quimby said there were 260 shifts last year when union members had to take on managers' duties.
Until last August, those union members got an extra 25 cents an hour when they filled in for a salaried manager, but that differential was not addressed when they signed a new contract last year and union members have since been negotiating a new pay scale with the county
Quimby said the $31,200 salary and benefits of a new manager was in line with what the county paid in union differentials last year, about $40,000.
