AUSTINTOWN -- A 16-year-old Austintown girl was accosted Tuesday night near the corner of Parkgate and Huntmere avenues by a naked man who made sexually suggestive remarks.
Police reports say the girl was walking east on Huntmere Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when she saw a man exit a dark-green car and later step naked from behind some bushes.
The man approached the girl and made several remarks, and the girl turned and ran in the opposite direction.
The man's car was later seen speeding away on Huntmere.
Curfew violation
CANFIELD -- Ten juveniles were charged with violating curfew Tuesday night after police responded to a call about a party near the Mill Creek bike path.
The party was reported to be in a field behind the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center at 7300 N. Palmyra Road. When police arrived at 10 p.m. Tuesday, they found the 10 juveniles walking toward a bonfire in the field. One of the juveniles was carrying a lawn chair.
Under the city curfew, all people under age 18 must be home by 10 p.m. on a weekday.
Police did not find anyone at the bonfire. However, they did find an unopened case of beer.
Roads being resurfaced
CANFIELD -- Resurfacing projects are expected to continue through Friday on state Routes 62 and 46 around the Village Square and along U.S. Route 224 to Winona Drive.
As a result, city officials are expecting traffic tie-ups in the area. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
Temporary closing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Fifth Avenue will be closed between Grant and Wood streets from 5:30 p.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday for the Greater Youngstown SoapBox Derby.
Traffic may cross Fifth Avenue at Rayen Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.
Prayer vigil set
CANFIELD -- The Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will sponsor a public vigil of prayer Thursday for Jay D. Scott and for all victims of violence. Scott is scheduled to be executed at 9 p.m. that day by the state of Ohio.
The vigil begins at 7:30 p.m. with Mass at St. Michael Church, Canfield. The church will remain open afterward for private prayer.
Bishop Thomas J. Tobin said, "The time has come to end the death penalty, create a more civilized and noble society, and insist once again on the unconditional sanctity of human life."
Treasure Tour planned
LORDSTOWN -- The first Treasure Tour for the Lake-to-River Greenway will be July 15, beginning and ending at Lordstown Park.
The event, which combines a bicycle tour and a treasure hunt, will raise money for the Friends of the Western Reserve Greenway Trail, which will be a bikeway from Lake Erie to the Ohio River when completed.
Registration will be from 7 to 10 a.m. at the park, and rides of eight, 30 or 62 miles will be available. For more information, call Rob Toti at (330) 533-1989 (Ext. 405).
Weapons charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police said they arrested a 19-year-old Youngstown man Monday who ran away after they stopped a car on a routine traffic violation. Jermaine Hodges will face one charge each of resisting arrest, being a felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
He's to appear before Judge Robert Douglas at 11:30 a.m. July 9 in Youngstown Municipal Court. Hodges was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped on Cohasset Drive, when police said they saw a 9mm handgun under his seat. He ran two blocks before being wrestled down, police said.
Police said he is not permitted to have a gun because of a previous drug conviction.
