LISBON -- Columbiana County Community Action Agency is to receive a nearly $989,200 federal grant through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to fund a handicapped training and technical assistance program.
Lightning caused fire
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Authorities said lightning started a fire that destroyed a barn at the home of Walter Johnson of 284 Fetsko Road. Neighbors said lightning hit the barn around 7:30 a.m. Monday, said Joseph Varga, Shenango Township assistant fire chief.
The barn had some hay and a number of cats in it and Varga didn't know the fate of the cats. The barn was engulfed in flames when firefighters reached the scene. The structure soon collapsed and was a total loss, he said. Johnson doesn't intend to rebuild, he said.
Heat from the fire melted some of the siding on Johnson's garage and house, Varga said. No damage estimate was available. Firefighters from Hermitage, West Middlesex and Pulaski assisted at the scene.
Drug charges levied
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested Michael V. Bailey, 23, of Cedar Avenue, on a warrant charging him with selling marijuana to an undercover police officer Feb. 21 on Washington Place. Bailey was arrested Monday at the Mercer County Courthouse when he showed up for a hearing in an unrelated case.
He was arraigned before District Justice Ruth French on a charge of possession of a controlled substance and jailed on $100,000 bond.
Container plant fire
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Authorities said a blower motor on an oven used to bake finishes on aerosol cans caught fire at the CCL Container plant at 1 Llodio Road around 8:40 a.m. Monday. The plant was evacuated and plant employees were able to quickly extinguish the flames with dry chemical extinguishers. There was little damage, a plant spokeswoman said.
Buhl farm youth group
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Registration for the Buhl Farm summer youth program will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Activities Building at the park near the Forker Boulevard entrance. The cost is $35 per child for the six-week program that will begin Monday and end July 27.
Parents should bring their child's report card as proof of grade placement and age. Children entering first or second grade this fall can participate in the pre-youth program each weekday from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Activities Building.
Children who will enter grades three through six this fall can participate in the youth program at Shelter 4 during the same daily hours. Swimming is included for older students.
Fund transfer approved
COLUMBUS -- The State Controlling Board has approved transfer of $804,970 from the Fedor Hall rehabilitation project and $703,434 from basic renovations fund at Youngstown State University to the Ward Beecher Hall heating and air conditioning improvement project.
It also gave Kent State University nearly $479,592 for a tunnelling project, while the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine of Rootstown is getting nearly $10,000 for recreation projects.
The 140-foot tunnel will allow KSU to connect its library to a new power plant. The board also voted to release $9,292 for the construction of basketball, volleyball and tennis courts for use by NEOUCOM students, faculty and staff members.
Police investigate death
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police continue investigating the weekend killing of a 32-year-old Youngstown man in the parking lot of Larry's Lounge, 2402 Hillman St. Police received a call just before 3 a.m. Friday about shots fired at the South Side night spot.
When officers arrived they found Raymond Hayes lying face up in the parking lot with a large crowd around him. Pellin Ambulance Service took Hayes to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
