Boros wins again
SUMMIT POINT, W.Va. -- Glenn Boros won his third race in a row recently during a 12-hour endurance event at the two-mile, 10-turn Summit Point Raceway.
The Youngstown racer started sixth in a field of 51 cars, in a Ferrari 348. By completing 462 laps -- 19 more than the runner-up -- Boros and two other drivers swept both the ITE Class and overall race.
Boros, 42, will try for four straight June 23 when a Grand American Road Racing series-sanctioned Ferrari Challenge is held at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut.
Fleischer to MUC
ALLIANCE -- Dave Fleischer, a Lakeview High graduate, will play baseball at Mount Union College.
A pitcher, the 6-foot-5 Fleischer was a two-year letterman for the Bulldogs. He was a first-team All-TAC 8 selection and received Lakeview's Outstanding Pitcher award.
Fight showin Canton
CANTON -- L & amp; M Productions and Ohio's Pound-For-Pound Promotions have arranged an ESPN Friday night fight show, July 20 at the Civic Center.
Seven bouts are slated including Mansfield's undefeated Tony "The Tiger" Hanshaw in a 10-round co-feature. In addition, Earnie Shavers will be on hand for autographs. Last year, Shavers was accorded the honor of being named the "hardest pound-for-pound puncher" in boxing history by Ring Magazine.
All reserved seats are $25. For tickets, call the Civic Center at (330) 489-3090. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Roy Bates Student Athletic Foundation.
NEO board to honorgraduating seniors
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- the Northeast District Athletic Board will present $500 scholarships to 42 high school seniors at the ninth annual scholar/athlete awards banquet June 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Suites.
Area scholarship winners are Southington High's Jessica Black, Western Reserve's Janice Shook, Mineral Ridge's Nicole Moore, Brookfield's David Eliser Jr. and Hubbard's Martin Kanetsky.
Two Geneva playersearn academic AA
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. -- Geneva College senior Dave D'Angelo, an Ellwood City native, and Ron Janicki were among 75 players selected on the NAIA Academic All-American team.
D'Angelo, a communications major, graduated at the top of Geneva's senior class with a GPA of 4.0 for his career.
He batted .350 and was named an honorable mention all-conference for the second season in a row.
Geneva finished the 2001 campaign with a record of 19-19 and was 10th in the American Mideast Conference.

Aeros win 3-1against Sea Dogs
AKRON -- Matt White pitched eight strong innings and Jim Goelz got the tiebreaking hit in the eighth as the Akron Aeros beat the Portland Sea Dogs 3-1 Sunday in the Eastern League.
After loading the bases with two outs, Goelz singled off Tim McClaskey (1-1) to give Akron a 3-1 lead. The Aeros tied the score 1-1 in the sixth on Josh Bard's first homer this season.
White (5-4) held Portland to five hits, struck out four and only allowed one baserunner to get past second.
Heath Honeycutt singled and scored on Ben Candelaria's double in the fifth to give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.
Cleveland Indians left-hander Scott Radinsky, recovering from major elbow surgery, pitched the ninth for his first save.
Indians outfielder Dave Roberts, recovering from shoulder surgery, went 0-for-3 for the Aeros.
Bard and Goelz each had two hits for Akron.
Toledo won't renewA.D.'s contract
TOLEDO -- The University of Toledo has decided not to renew the contract of athletics director Pete Liske.
Interim president William Decatur said the decision was based on a recommendation by the university's board of trustees. Liske's contract expires June 30.
Liske, 60, has been athletics director for five years. He has an unlisted number and could not be reached to comment.
"The interim president and the board of trustees have concluded that we have lost confidence in his management and his leadership, and we need to move on," James Tuschman, chairman of the board of trustees, said at a Saturday news conference.
Among the problems encountered by Liske was a $350,000 deficit in the $12 million athletic department operating budget last year.
Liske was hired in June 1996 from Idaho University. He replaced Al Bohl, who left to become AD at Fresno State.
An interim director or a team of interim directors will run the department until an AD is named, Tuschman said.
