YOUNGSTOWN -- Several military personnel with ties to this area are taking part in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf.
Aboard the USS Philippine Sea, a guided missile cruiser, is Navy Petty Officer 3rd class Christopher A. Rhodes (Campbell Memorial High School '92), a son of Robert B. and Patricia A. Rhodes of 256 Robinson Road, Campbell. He joined the Navy in 1999 after graduating with a bachelor of science degree from Miami University in 1997.
Aboard the USS Gonzalez, a guided missile destroyer, is Navy Fireman Jason T. Barger (Mohawk High School, Bessemer, Pa., '00), a son of Ken and Judith A. Barger of 394 Trotter Road, Bessemer. Also on board is Navy Petty Officer 2nd class George R. Waller, whose wife, Lisa, is the daughter of Sharon Mays of Lilburne Drive, Youngstown.
Carrier commemoration
WELLSVILLE -- Navy Airman Kevin T. Gordon recently took part in the 40th anniversary celebration of the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk while it was deployed in Yokosuka,Japan. Gordon (White Oak High School, Jacksonville, N.C. '99), is the son of Julie L. Jackson of 436 Commerce, Wellsville, and Tom Gordon of Midway Park, N.C.
