Should expectant mothers be guaranteed a special parking place while shopping? Some Pennsylvania legislators think so.
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is looking at the Expectant Mothers Parking Act, which would allow pregnant women to get a special placard for their vehicle from their doctor, similar to the type of placard issued now for people with disabilities, said state Rep. Rod Wilt of Greenville, R-17th. That would allow them to park in specially designated parking areas that businesses would set aside for their convenience.
Hermitage Town Plaza on East State Street, Hermitage, already has something like that in place, designating select parking spaces for new or expectant mothers. That system works on the honor basis.
The state law would carry a fine of $50 to $200 for violating the special parking regulation, Wilt said.
The idea came from a "There Ought To Be a Law" contest for school students, he said.
Rainfall: Things are finally starting to look a little more damp in the Shenango Valley.
After months of lower-than-normal rainfall, the valley got a better dose of water in May.
The Shenango Valley Division of Consumers Pennsylvania Water Co. said the rainfall for May totaled 3.72 inches as compared to the normal 3.46 inches for the month.
Rainfall for all of last year totaled 38.18 inches, down more than 1.1 inches from the annual norm.
So far this year, the rainfall totals 12.1 inches, some 2 inches below normal.
Recognition: St. Francis Hospital in New Castle recently received recognition from the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Health Association of the United States.
The hospital was honored for 75 years of continuous membership in the organization that promotes Catholic values and beliefs in health care.
The hospital has been in New Castle since 1908 when it was founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Millvale, Pa. There are 50 physicians and 500 others employed at the hospital.
