126th annual meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning Valley Historical Society's 126th annual meeting is set for June 19 at the new D.D. and Velma Davis Education and Visitor Center at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek Park.
Cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and a sit-down dinner will be served on the ballroom level overlooking Lake Glacier. Judith Minogue will provide hammered dulcimer music, and participants can tour the new visitors' center and gardens.
Cost is $32 for members, $37 for guests. Reservations must be received by Tuesday. Send checks to the Society at 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown 44502. For more information, call the society.
Carjacking reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- A North Lima man told police he was carjacked late Friday in a vacant lot where he had gone to buy crack.
The man flagged down police just before midnight in the lot at 1015 Otis St. He said he pulled into the lot to make the purchase and got out of the car and two men told him to follow them behind a building. Once there, one of the men produced a handgun and told the North Lima man to get on the ground. When he complied, the two men took his car keys and $32 he had in his hand and drove off in the car.
Man shot in leg
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Chicago Avenue man was shot in the left calf while walking to a store on the South Side Friday night.
Donald Thompson, 45, told police he was walking to the Party Pantry near the corner of Canfield Road and Glenwood Avenue when he heard several people arguing near a Dairy Queen. He then heard two gunshots.
Thompson discovered he was shot when he got to the Party Pantry. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Weapon charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A South Truesdale Avenue man was arrested Friday night at a South Side car wash and charged with carrying a loaded concealed weapon.
Police went to the So Fresh, So Clean car wash at 5:15 p.m. Friday to investigate numerous drug complaints and found the man drinking a beer near one of the bay doors. They noticed a bulge under the man's shirt, searched him and found a 9 mm handgun loaded with 13 rounds.
Road to be closed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A section of Price Road from Calvary Run Drive to the Fellows Riverside Gardens entrance in Mill Creek Park will be closed for several days starting Monday for storm sewer work.
Fellows Riverside Gardens visitors will have access from the McKinley Avenue entrance off Mahoning Avenue.
Officer treated
COITSVILLE -- A Campbell police officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center after he accidentally shot himself Saturday morning.
Reports say Daniel Raseta was participating in a training exercise at the Coitsville Firing Range on North Hubbard Road when he accidentally fired through his gun holster. The bullet reportedly traveled through his calf before hitting the floor.
