Wooster: Nic Moga, a junior pitcher from Boardman High, had 13 appearances, including seven as a starter. The right-hander posted a 5-1 record and 4.50 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 48.2 innings despite suffering an arm injury early in the campaign. He yielded 23 earned runs, 58 hits and 12 walks. His top performance of the season came March 13 against Ripon when he threw a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts for 62/3 innings before being relieved in the seventh. In his career, Moga has appeared in 49 games, including 17 as a starter, posting an 11-6 record with three saves, 92 strikeouts and 4.09 ERA. He helped Wooster to a 34-10 record and to the NCAC East Division regular-season title. Moga is the son of Nancy and Nic Moga and is majoring in sociology.
Also with Wooster is Evan Agona (Ursuline), a freshman second baseman. Agona played in 11 games and batted .455 (5-for 11) with two runs scored. His first collegiate hit was a single in Wooster's 13-0 win over Malone April 5. Agona is majoring in business economics, and is the son of Pamela and William Agona of Cortland.
Baldwin-Wallace: Greg Fitzsimmons, a basketball standout for Columbiana High, will continue his career at B-W. He averaged 16.7 points and 9.1 rebounds and made 67 percent of his goal attempts as a senior. He was named All-Northeast Ohio Inland District honorable mention, All-Tri-County League first team and All-Columbiana County second team. Fitzsimmons plans to major in pre-medicine. He wants to become a dentist. He is the son of Geri and Robert Rubicky and Alan Fitzsimmons.
Freshman Justin Miller (Austintown Fitch) was a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Division III track meet in the 110-meter high hurdles. Miller achieved that distinction by taking second at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships in 14.94 seconds. However, that time eventually didn't hold up, and he failed to qualify.
Thiel: Kevin Wilder (Woodrow Wilson), a junior on the men's track team, was among the top sprinters in the Presidents' Athletic Conference this spring. Wilder was runner-up in the 200 meters (23.0) and fourth in the 100 (11.2) at the PAC Championships. He helped the team to a fourth-place finish.
Johns Hopkins: John Krivonak (Canfield) shared third-base duties for the baseball team and was an integral part of the Blue Jays' success. Krivonak, a junior, started 26 games and played strong defense, helping Johns Hopkins to a 33-14 record, including 13-5 in the Centennial Conference for the championship. He batted .241 (19-for-79) with nine RBIs and nine runs scored, and struck out only once in 79 at-bats. The Blue Jays, by winning the Centennial, qualified for the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic tournament. It marked the 10th time Johns Hopkins made it to NCAA play. It won two games before being eliminated.
Mount Union: Three area graduating seniors will attend the college in the fall. They are Ronda Barth, who played softball at Western Reserve High; Abbey Taylor, a volleyball and track performer at West Branch, and Brian Biddlestone, a football player for Niles High.
Barth, a catcher, made the All-Inter-County League first team for three years. She also set the school batting average record with .580. Barth was a four-year letter-winner.
Taylor was an outstanding hitter in volleyball, and won three letters and served as team captain. She made first-team All-District and All-NBC. Taylor also competed in track and holds school records in the shot put and high jump.
Biddlestone, a tackle, was one of the top defensive players in the area. He was the All-Metro Athletic Conference and All-Trumbull County Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and senior. He also was selected for the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association all-star game.
Malone: Jeff Jackson (Columbiana), a junior golfer, helped the Pioneers to a third-place finish at the NAIA National Championships held at Isleta Eagle Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M. Jackson had Malone's third-best score with 76-74-74-76--300, which was 45th overall. Jackson also was named an NAIA All-American Scholar Athlete with a 3.75 grade-point average. In last year's NAIA national meet, Jackson produced Malone's best score and earned All-American honors.
Eric Hodgson (Salem), a sophomore, placed 15th in the marathon at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Hodgson was clocked in 2 hours, 48 minutes, 49 seconds, as Malone finished 13th. In the women's NAIA meet, Dawn Woolf (United), a junior, was a member of the 4x100 relay that turned in its best time of the season (48.82 seconds) in the preliminaries to advance. The Malone women placed 31st in the meet.
Westminster: Mike Colaneri (Struthers) will play basketball for the Titans. Colaneri averaged nine points, five rebounds and five assists for Struthers, and was picked to the All-Metro Athletic Conference first team and All-Northeast Ohio third team. He also captured the Coaches Award, and was named the St. Elizabeth Player of the Month. Colaneri also played on the football team, and was named the Team Offensive Most Valuable Player. He was picked as an All-NEO honorable mention. In addition, Colaneri was recognized as a Butler Wick Scholar-Athlete of the Week. He is the son of Jacci and Ron Colaneri.
Thirteen Valley student-athletes were recognized by the Presidents Athletic Conference. The recognition was given in place of All-PAC honors until Westminster is accepted for full membership into the league. That membership is expected by the conclusion of the 2001-02.
