First place: Since April 26, the Indians have won 27 of 39 games and have outscored their opponents 248-195. The Indians are 32-0 in games they lead after eight innings.
Primetime canceled: Tribe catcher Einar Diaz earned cheers when he caught designated hitter Deion Sanders trying to steal second base in the fifth inning.
Threat ends: Indians baserunner Omar Vizquel ended the Tribe's seventh-inning threat when he was caught stealing second base by Reds catcher Jason LaRue. "Our one, two and three hitters have the green light to go anytime," Indians manager Charlie Manuel said of Kenny Lofton, Vizquel and Roberto Alomar. "If I take it away, they won't stay aggressive. Obviously, he thought he had a good jump and could make it."
On deck: The games tonight and Sunday against the Reds are sellouts. Right-hander Dave Burba (7-2, 6.02 earned-run average) will face Reds righty Osvaldo Fernandez (5-5, 6.34). Sunday at 1 p.m., right-hander Jaret Wright (2-0, 2.61) goes against Cincinnati right-hander Chris Reitsma (2-5, 4.08).
Next series: The Brewers come into Cleveland for three 7 p.m. games next week, and tickets are available: Tuesday, 4,500; Wednesday, 8,500; and Thursday, 3,000.
Interleague masters: In five years of regular-season competition between the American and National leagues, the Indians have the best interleague play record -- 41-27. The Florida Marlins are second at 39-27.
Hitting streaks: Alomar's third inning homer extended his hitting streak to 11 games. During the streak, he is batting .432 with five homers, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored. Reds outfielder Alex Ochoa had four hits and extended his game streak to seven. On the current Reds roadtrip, he's hitting .484 with six doubles and eight RBIs. Reds first baseman Sean Casey singled in the eighth inning to extend his streak to eight games.
Homers: Ellis Burks has hit 12 homers in 29 games since May 1. Reds infielder Bill Selby's sixth-inning homer was his second in the majors. His first came in 1996 when he was with the Red Sox and homered at Oakland. He was intentionally walked in the eighth inning, the second free pass of his career.
