Volleyball schedule
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State's 2001 volleyball schedule includes matches against traditional powers Penn State and North Carolina State.
The Penguins, who will compete in Horizon League (formerly the Midwestern Collegiate Conference) will play at Penn State on Sept. 11. The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 6 in the country last season.
The Penguins will also take part in the Florida Atlantic Tournament on Sept. 14-15 where they will meet Memphis, Florida Atlantic and North Carolina State.
YSU is also scheduled to play 14 matches in the Horizon League, beginning against Wright State on Sept. 21 in Dayton. The Penguins play host to Cleveland State on Sept. 29 in the home opener.

Sharon Speedwayhas events planned
HARTFORD -- Sharon Speedway has been quiet for two weeks due to the weather. The next racing is scheduled for June 8.
Points leaders going into June are Jason Johnson in the Sunburst Environmental Sprints, Lou Blaney for the Gibson-Governor V-8 Modifieds, Dwayne Clay in the Burghill Auto Salvage/Hover Racing Stock Cars and Jeff Rudrick in the Coy Brothers Trucking/Hover Racing E-Mods.
The June 29 event will be the Double Technology Halfway Challenge, awarding $1000 to the points leaders of the Sprints and V-8 Modifieds, and $500 to the point leaders of the Stock Cars and E-Mods.
The first of several specials at the speedway will be the Coy Brothers Classic/York Triathlon 40 lap event for the E-Mod division. The winner will collect $800 for first place. Companion divisions for this date will be the Sprints, and Stock Cars.
Sharon Speedway will host the fifth leg of the Ohio Sprint Speedweek on July 5.
On June 16, the only time the Late Models will appear at Sharon in the 2001 racing season, the MACS Late Model traveling series led by points leader, Matt Urban of North East, Pa. The York Sprint Triathlon-Racing Series will also compete in its third event of the series inaugural season.
Sharon Speedway is offering a discount general admission ticket to groups of 25 people. For more information on the group rates, call Linda McMillin at (724) 283-4445.
Admission prices are $10 for adults, $5 for juniors (13-16), with children 12 and under free. The family pass (two adults and up to four children) is $25. Pit gate admission is $20. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with racing at 7:30.
Winner, Pantealead first weekend
CANFIELD -- The team of Jessica Winner and Jim Pantea rolled 1,482 while Theresa Florjancic-Ron Moore posted 1,440 on the first weekend of the Mar-Hill Mixed Doubles bowling tournament at Amron Lanes.
Cathy Woolensack and Scott Price hold down third place with 1,424 while Nancy Hays-Emmanuel Droullis are fourth with 1,417.
The tournament runs weekends until August. Squad times are 8 p.m. on Thursdays and 7 and 9:15 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in June. To enter, call 782-9140.

Aeros win 7-0
WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Scott Pratt had three hits and drove in two runs Wednesday night to lead the Akron Aeros to a 7-0 Eastern League victory over the New Haven Ravens.
The Aeros' Ryan Drese (4-6) scattered six hits, walked one and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings. James Johnson and Martin Vargas combined to complete the shutout.
Browns sign rookie,free agent tackle
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns signed free agent defensive tackle Mike Thompson and rookie offensive tackle John Raveche to one-year contracts Wednesday.
Thompson appeared in 13 games for the Browns last season, recording a career-high 28 tackles. The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder also recorded one sack and forced one fumble.
Raveche was a 2-year starter at Princeton.
