Wooster: Brianne Diorio, a freshman on the softball team from Cardinal Mooney High, was selected to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference second team. She batted .366 in NCAC competition and was voted "Offensive Player of the Year" by her teammates. Overall, Diorio appeared in 34 games with 31 starts and batted .287 on 27-for-94 to rank No. 5 on the team. She helped the Scots to a 20-19 record, including 10-4 in the NCAC. Diorio also had 12 runs, seven RBIs, six doubles, two sacrifices, two steals and a .955 fielding average.
Ashland: Sophomore Adrienne Blewitt (Boardman) won the discus, placed second in the shot put and was 13th in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division II track and field outdoor championships held at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. It was Blewitt's first gold medal of her career. Her best shot put was 51 feet, behind winner Heather Leverington of Emporia State with 53-5. It was Blewitt's third national runner-up in the shot, including twice in the outdoor meet and once in the indoor competition. Her hammer throw was 153-11. Blewitt's national success capped an outstanding season. She was the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference female athlete of the year, and was named the Ashland University female student-athlete of the year.
In the NCAA men's competition, Ashland's T.J. Koniowsky, a senior from McDonald, placed 13th in the discus with a throw of 164-3, and was 11th in the hammer throw with 176-11. Koniowsky previously won All-American honors in the hammer. The Ashland women were 11th and the men 12th in the final team standings.
Muskingum: Brian Jenkins, a Youngstown State graduate and a former Penguins assistant coach, has been named wide receivers coach for the football team. Jenkins joins the Fighting Muskies' staff directed by coach Jeff Heacock, a native of Beloit and a graduate of West Branch High. Jenkins has been a member of three national championship teams -- two at YSU in 1994 and 1997, and once at the University of Oklahoma. Jenkins launched his coaching career in 1994 at YSU as a volunteer assistant under then-coach Jim Tressel. Jenkins stayed with the Penguins for five years, and was elevated to a graduate assistant in 1997. While with YSU, he coached outside linebackers, defensive linemen and wide receivers. Jenkins went to Glenville (W.Va.) State in March, 1999 to become a defensive line coach and video coordinator. Then in July, 1999, he became the athletic video coordinator at Oklahoma under coach Bob Stoops, a native of Youngstown and a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High. Heacock said of Jenkins, "He understands what it takes to be successful. He comes highly recommended from all of the coaching staffs he's worked with."
Marietta: Matt DeSalvo, a junior pitcher from New Castle (Union High) has been selected as the 2001 Kent Tekulve Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year for the second straight year. The winner is chosen by OAC coaches. DeSalvo broke the NCAA Division III record for most strikeouts in a season with 167. He led the OAC in victories with 14, and ranked among the leaders in earned run average with 1.35. He also was selected to the 2001 All-OAC First Team and the OAC All-Tournament Team. The Pioneers won their 12th straight OAC tourney championship. Last year, he was named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-American First Team.
Baldwin-Wallace: Bryan Bartunek, a junior tennis player from Warren Harding High, was named to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Men's At-Large First Team. Bartunek has a 3.62 grade-point average as a major in business administration.
Thiel: Tami Hassell and Nikki Willrich, graduates of Hubbard and Girard highs, respectively, were members of the softball team that posted a 17-19 record, including 5-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Hassell, a sophomore, started all 36 games and batted .304 with 13 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. She was selected to the All-PAC Second Team. Willrich, a junior, played in 11 games and batted .450 with five RBIs and two stolen bases. Thiel lost to Bethany in the PAC Tournament finals, 6-0, 8-0, as the Bison swept their third straight PAC crown.
Notre Dame (Ohio): Chrissy DeFrank, a senior on the softball team from Austintown Fitch High, has been named an American Mideast Conference 2001 Scholar-Athlete. DeFrank has a 3.53 grade-point average as a major in graphic communication.
In volleyball, Notre Dame recruited Maria DelVecchio from Jackson-Milton High, where she was a four-year letterwinner, team captain and Most Valuable Player. She has a 3.9 grade-point average and is ranked No. 3 in her class; and was a member of the National Honor Society and selected as an All-American Scholar. DelVecchio played a variety of positions for the BlueJays: setter, outside hitter, opposite and defensive specialist; and was the team's top server and a two-time selection to the All-District and All-Inter-County League second teams. Additionally, she played USA Club volleyball the past four years, and was picked to the District One and League All-Star Teams. Plus, DelVecchio won three letters as a guard on the J-M basketball team, and made All-ICL honorable mention; and was captain of the cheerleading squad.
