CHAMPION -- Township trustees unanimously approved a request by Emerson Avenue residents for streetlighting.
Trustees noted that residents voted 25 to 1 in favor of lighting. The total estimated cost of $824 for streetlight installation and a $708 yearly fee for running electricity to those lights will be billed annually and divided among residents at about $44 each the first year and $21 thereafter.
Also passed Monday was a resolution to advertise for bids for the township's $75,800 state Issue 2 road paving project. The Ohio Public Works Commission has approved paving 12 township roads.
Zoning Inspector John Ghindia reported the township's valuation for May was $104,102 and it took in $485 in fees. His report also showed the township had sent 86 letters to residents with junk cars in their yards. Most residents have removed them. Six have applied to house the vehicles.
Fee increase: Residents living outside Champion who receive its mutual aid paramedic services will see a fee increase from $120 to $150 after a decision by trustees.
In addition, they noted cat and dog rabies vaccinations will be available from 1 to 3 p.m. June 20 in the township garage. The cost is $5 per animal.
Pest spraying: Trustees also answered a resident's inquiry about township mosquito spraying. Though they didn't specifically say they wouldn't spray, Trustee Tom Tracy said mosquitoes usually follow migratory birds. He said spraying is impractical and doesn't solve the problem.
Tracy also said the effect of spraying, being done by some townships, only lasts one day. The spraying vehicle goes down the middle of the road, he said, spraying about 25 feet on each side of the road. It is a mist, he said, that floats to the ground and is only effective in killing mosquitoes while the mist is in the air.
